The most underrated and overrated players in CricketWeb

I remember the tail end of Viv’s career and I’ve watched plenty of footage of him in his prime. If he’d played with modern bats he’d have possibly killed bowlers in their follow thru. No one’s hit the ball harder or further or cleaner. I’ll die on this hill against anyone who thinks he was...

The most underrated and overrated players in CricketWeb

Not sure Viv is overrated. There’s a bunch of people who for no valid reason think he wasn’t that good. Then there’s all the humans who acknowledge (correctly) he was a batting god, the most fearsome batsman ever to walk the field.

MacGill should’ve played a heap more tests than he did, he would’ve if I were a selector. Especially when Watson was available/fit

It’s also a myth that Miller couldn’t bowl long spells. He was perfectly capable of doing so. Bradman was quoted as saying it was better to use him in short bursts during the 1948 Ashes as the team contained Ern Toshack and Bill Johnston, who were actual workhorses, as well as Lindwall’s pace...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I’m not going to get into how I don’t think Miller is very much of a downgrade as a middle order batsman than others mentioned. What I will say is this. Let’s say we’re playing a hypothetical series against England in an ATG scenario. Pure myth. The England side contains Hutton, Hobbs...

Was Mark Boucher lucky to play almost 150 tests for a top team like South Africa?

Gilchrist was a better keeper than Stewart or Flower, both of whom should’ve played as specialist batsmen. England’s handling of Stewart’s career was a shambles. He should’ve played all his tests as an opening batsmen without the gloves, and he’d have been close to an all time great. He was...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

There’s no reason Miller couldn’t bowl first change as well as any of the other bowlers who get picked in these teams as a third quick but usually opened the bowling in real tests.

Possibly a lot of intangible factors as well, his leadership, tactical nous, effect on team dynamics, etc etc

I sway every way on these XIs but the selection of Miller as a genuine 3rd quick who bats top 6 allows you to pick Warne and OReilly. Imagine the potential carnage and spin aggression. Obviously if you don’t want two spinners you trade Miller for Border/Harvey/Smith, pick Davo/Cummins/Lindwall...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Sectarianism was strong in Aus at that time. The majority of Australians were white and either descended from Irish (Catholics) or English (Protestant/Masons). There was hostility between the two groups. Catholics were more union focussed generally while Protestaht/Masons generally ran their own...

Your ATG team pace bowling trio

But if I was picking a swag XI (swag is an important factor in cricket, don’t believe it’s not), I’d take Lillee, Ambrose, Garner

Do tailend runs affect your cricketer rating?

It’d be interesting to get stats on tailenders who had lower batting averages but faced the most balls per innings. Just being able to hang around is valuable. I know Gillespie made that 200 but I always admired his ability to stick for ages even when not scoring, in order to build partnerships.

You can get pills for that

Do tailend runs affect your cricketer rating?

Yeh I was pretty much agreeing with you. Wondering whether Greg Matthews, Tony Dodemaide and Simon O’Donnell might’ve been selected as bowlers ahead of better bowlers for batting ability. Could be wrong. Think since then we’ve definitely selected the best bowlers.
