    Herbert Sutcliffe vs Jack Hobbs

Hobbs in the pre war period was putting up big numbers in some of the lowest scoring tests ever. The overall batting average in the tests Hobbs played before the war was 25.6...

Is there a difference between a greater cricketer and a better cricketer?

True but Warne was a drug cheat, took money from bookies and also died. All three things which only lame people do.

    Sunil Gavaskar vs Greg Chappell

Lol . **** is one of the very first words that comes to mind when thinking of gavaskar. Terrible human being. Better batsman than Chappell though.

Is there a difference between a greater cricketer and a better cricketer?

Calling murali the greatest bowler is perfectly justifiable.

    McGrath vs Hadlee

I definitely argue that for ponting (for example in comparison to Greg Chappell who only played 12 odd years), however his case is trickier because of how concentrated his peak was into a 4-5 year stretch. He had less sustained excellence than most atg batsmen.

    Brian Lara vs Shane Warne

For Tendulkar ? Yeah it did, he played really impressive innings in all those tours .

    Brian Lara vs Shane Warne

Tendulkar was a test standard batsman before he was an adult (with decent to great contributions on tours of Pakistan, NZ, England, Aus, SA) which is completely unheard of. If you include these averages with no context arguing he should be averaging 50 immediately then it's a pretty pointless...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Unlike you I don't consider who makes other people's atg xi as an important criteria for greatness. So this question is irrelevant to me. You rate Barry Richards as greater than gavaskar (and many other modern atgs with full careers) pretty much entirely on the basis of how writers/other...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

@kyear2 Gavaskar seems to make a lot of these XIs. IIRC he was quite high up (I think top 10) in ESPN's legends of cricket thing too. You clearly don't rate him that highly though. What gives.

Who is the most intelligent bowler of all time?

For as many magic balls as he bowled, I've not seen another bowler psych as many batsmen out by just bowling normal deliveries as Warne did. Just amazing mindgames. If I could pick one bowler to be micd up his entire career, it'd definitely be Warne. That little glimpse we got into his brain...

Who is the most intelligent bowler of all time?

McGrath still had that uneasy bounce because of his height and arm length which is a more intrinsic physical attribute than pace. Not saying he wasn't a genius of course, but I don't think he had to overcome physical limitations as much as some others, just used what he had perfectly.

    Shane Warne vs Sachin Tendulkar

People voting "not close" in these threads are so weird. What sport are you guys watching.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Sure but come on, it'd be like if someone started gassing up Tendulkar's bowling in a comparison with Sobers. Actually, now that I think about it, that has way more validity. Sachin actually bowled valuable spells in some of our most famous wins in tests (particularly vs Australia). Gassing up...

    G Smith vs Kohli overseas

Don't buy the idea that Australia and SA matter more in an overseas record. Lots of asian batsmen suck balls in England , NZ too. Kohli's been crap on a lot of tours outside of his 2015-2018 peak . Smith was a consistent force away from home and did it in a tougher batting position albeit a...
