What is clear though..Jamie How is the best opener in NZ right now.

McIntosh 260 runs at an average of 27 for Auckland this season in 10 innings...not good enough. If anything Redmond's been the next best opener with 431 runs in 10 innings with a century and 3 half centuries.

But where are the other opening options. There just aren't any. They've got to hope Bell pulls it together by the return trip to England in May.

How's been slow, if he gets out now he'll probably be ridiculed for taking up so many balls but he'll know that the longer he can see off the new ball, the more runs he can score later. Fleming's scoring runs at the other end anyway.

It's very poor bowling considering these are the conditions that are supposedly ideal for these England bowlers. Still, one wicket and it could change dramatically so we'll just have to wait and see.

ffs, why is Fleming retiring? With less pressure on him he can concentrate on racking up some runs over the next year or two. Anyway..not to be.

Come on fella's don't forget you guys were 3 for 4.

Like I said, it's going to be tough in these conditions. 250 will still be a competitive score if you ask me.

Mills ain't that bad. He's hardly played any test cricket to be fair. Hopefully Mills, Martin and Southee can form a good combination over the next few years.

Well done Southee, he's definately showed he wasn't U19 player of the tournament for no reason. Not overally quick but I think in a few years he'll be up around 140 km's. His seam presentation is the key. It's moving around this morning, tough session ahead for the NZ openers.

it's not going to be easy out there for the bowlers. Sun is coming out, pitch is flat, wind is up. There will be some hard slog ahead. But i still feel this game is out of reach for NZ anyway.

Pretty average bowling there from Gillespie and Martin but anyhow..437 to win. James Franklin apparently reckons it won't swing as much as some people are thinking and I guess he'd know as he's played many a game at the Basin.

I think England will declare before play. If Anderson can bowl, I doubt they'd want to risk him going out to bat for the sake of 2 or 3 overs and then get hit on the foot or something. A 420 odd lead is more than likely enough.

Cricinfo says conditions are well suited to bowling. HOWEVER, there is a strong northerly wind coming through and if there's one less bowler it puts a lot of pressure on the backup bowlers to run up in to the wind.

I would have backed them to get 300, but 400 is probably a bit too many. This test won't be drawn so it will be interesting to see whether NZ try to blaze the total down or inch their way. I really think they've got to go out and attack the English bowlers and get on top early. The onus is on...

Not surprised about Harmison but Hoggard???? He could have been bloody dangerous on the Wellington pitch. The NZ team will be certainly happy about that.

Hmm yes, Michael Mason is a name I forgot. He was bowling well before he got injured. Elliott bats about 5 or 6 for Wellington I think. His own words are that he's a batsman who can bowl a bit.

He's running out of time to be fit if you ask me. Gillespie and O'Brien are at least bowling overs right now where as Franklin could turn up completely undercooked like Hoggard and Harmison have for this series. Also, I don't know why you've got Ryder in that team when he'll definately be out.

Hay will be held back for an 'A' tour I reckon. Nicol's been on a couple, but I'd say he needs further convincing. The likes of Greg Todd and Neil Broom probably need further 'A' tours as well. Im not sure what the rules state, but I wouldn't be surprised if Johann Myburgh got selected too for...

Hopkins has been in pretty good form. I reckon he'll definately be in there as back-up keeper to McCullum so he can take a break during some of the warm-up games. The six I think they'd take: (not my personal preference) Fulton, Hopkins, Gillespie, Elliott, Southee and Sinclair
