    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

350.5. It's the same pitch as last week, and unlikely to turn today. Pakistan really gambled on batting first.

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

That toss changed the odds from 3.5/1.6 to 2.75/1.95.

I don't mind a flat pitch or a spinning pitch as a fan, and it's such a fallacy in cricket commentary in general that there's an 'ideal' pitch. I think test cricket loses a little of its much needed variety if we cut out any sort of pitch, short of it being actively dangerous. The only thing...

Hit the ball twice - why is it a mode of dismissal.

Actually no - fielding becomes mainly about how quickly you can pick up every ball that doesn't take a wicket and throw it over the boundary before they can run too many.

Fully expecting this mockers transgression to see them run through us tbh.

Three tests after they played an all-seam attack against Bangladesh. This home season is 4 tests old and Pakistan have played 11 different bowlers. Khurram Shahzad and Mir Hamza are the only ones to average under 50, and neither are playing.

Woakes and Atkinson played every test in the home summer and will presumably be playing in NZ as well so it makes sense. But yeah it's lame that having to rest your bowlers is such a thing. I think it's the biggest reason ODI scores outside of world cups have been so much higher in the last...

Hit the ball twice - why is it a mode of dismissal.

The forward defensive followed by running your hundred becomes the standard approach. Kenya rise to the top of the ICC rankings as the sport becomes mostly about how much distance you can run in a session.

Hit the ball twice - why is it a mode of dismissal.

'Hit twice' doesn't really have to be a dismissal, it could be dead ball, or runs discounted from the batting side like the one short rule, etc. But I think if there wasn't any law against hitting the ball twice to score, then batting is open to being completely different. Batters could...

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

It's apperently going to be the same pitch, which makes the toss a lot more important than the first game. I don't think even that pancake will completely hold together for a 6th or 7th innings. Note that it's England's turn to win the toss.

I don't think it's a crazy suggestion. Root is there to provide offspin if all you want from your offspinner is to give Stokes less of a workload. And lengthening the batting lineup after going 1-0 up in the series isn't exactly unheard of either. Say the attack is 1. Atkinson 2. Carse/Woakes...

    Joe Root is number one

They both have 4-year peaks compared to 5, or you end up including a year of mid-career meh for Root or a year of being banned for Smith. In general Smith's 2014-2017 is untouchable. Absolutely ridiculous average and consistency of tonning up which we probably haven't seen from any modern...

    Jacques Kallis vs Ricky Ponting

If you think that bowlers striking more quickly is more valuable than not, then you also presumably think that batsmen who play for longer innings and therefore *stop* bowlers from striking quickly is also more valuable than not. Or maybe you want to just have a number to appendage your vague...

    The Records and Milestones thread

Root needs 12 runs in the next test to take the record of most runs in Asia by a player from another continent. This post made in service of attempting to extend the number of consecutive tests in which Root takes a record off Cook.

    *OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

This came up in the thread yesterday - the closest we've ever come is Jayawardene and Sangakkara putting on the record stand against SA in 2006, when Mahela hit 374 and Sanga a disappointing 287. The latter is the highest ever second-high score in an innings.

    Joe Root is number one

2018-2020: 4 hundreds in 60 innings 2021-2024: 18 hundreds in 91 innings He was the top scorer in the world for the former as well as the latter.

Root now has his two highest scores batting at #3. He'd probably be alright.
