Stats

Javed Miandad averages 52.57 in tests
and
Sunil Gavaskar averages 51.12 in tests

Javed has Played in 189 innings
and
Gavaskar has played in 214 Innings

Javed has made 6 Double Centuries
Whereas
Gavaskar has made 4

Javed's Highest score is 280*
and
Gavaskar's highest score is 236*

Gavaskar has scored 200s only against two countries
whereas
Javed has scored against every country except W.I and Zim

Sunil has made 11 more centuries than Gavaskar

and Javed has player 25 less innings than Gavaskar

The only difference is sunil's average against the Westindies he averages more than Javed against the Windies .. that is the only difference for me ... so why the hell is Sunil Rated so high and no one gives credit to Javed miandad.

so from stats ... if javed scores at an average of about 43 in 25 innings then he will be able to score 10000 runs ...and an average on 43 is pretty low by his standards

and in the ODIs there is no competition ... Javed is faaaar better than Gavaskar

gavaskar averages 35
and javed averages 42
Gavaskar has scored 1 Century
whereas Javed has scored 8

I fail to understand why is Gavaskar Considered as great all over the world and javed is sooo under rated???????

Tons of people give credit to Miandad. Please don't start a Pakistan v India war where there is absolutely no basis for it. Javed Miandad is rated by many as one of the finest players of his time.

That is all.

Both are great players, though in the end Miandad's performance against Windies counts against him.. just like Inzi's against Australia when compared to Lara, Tendulkar etc

There have been plenty more fabulous middle-order batsmen (viv, bradman, sachin, lara, etc.) that may overshadow Miandad when people examine all-time greats. Gavaskar, on the other hand, doesn't face the same level of competition at the opener's position. Maybe that's why he gets recognized as an all-time great opener. miandad was great though.

i don't think a single indian would fail to give credit to miandad especially after that pressure cooker hundred with the last ball six off chetan sharma at sharjah...we all hated him :) but had to salute his incredible innings under pressure...he is the best batsman that pakistan has produced imo, one of the best pressure-players of all time and a bonafide all-time great....the reason why people rate gavaskar so highly because of his tremendous performances against the windies in the 70s and 80s....both are great players...why bother to compare?

Obviously Miandad was a better ODI batsman that Gavaskar, that's why Miandad makes All Time World ODI XIs and Gavaskar is never mentioned.

In tests they're both greats in my mind (and most others) and are obviously one of the best batsman to ever be produced by their respective countries, its just Gavaskar's amazing record against the WI holds him in high regard to many experts because scoring so well against the dominant team (Even if his averaged is reduced when he's up against the famous pace quartet, its still higher than most if not all others) always puts you far and above the rest.

A perfect comparison is Inzy compared to Lara and Sachin who have much better records against Aus (and in Aus) than Inzy, who is still without a doubt a brilliant batsman.

On stats it is difficult to rate Javed lower than Gavaskar. He was also, perhaps, more of a man-for-the-occasion than Gavaskar though Gavaskar too has very good credentials there. But Miandad has never been rated in the same bracket as Gavaskar and this needs to be understood.

Look up anyone's all time world test side and you will find Gavaskar either in it or just losing out to the likes of Huttton, Sutcliffe, Hobbs, Morris etc. But Miandad doesnt come into consideration. The same holds for Border and even Steve Waugh inspite of their tremendous record. Why ?

1. Gavaskar was technically flawless, well almost flawless. He played both defensively and in the aggressive mode in copybook style. Miandad was more of an innovator. His stance onwards his game was unorthodox. Cricket is a game that is partial to orthodoxy particularly towards top order batsmen when allowing them its equivalent of 'sainthood'

2. Although he was a player whose first instinct was not to get out, he played all the strokes and played them with great beauty. Gavaskar cut, square and late, drove, off both feet, to covers, straight and long on, flicked off the stumps to mid wicket, glanced to square and fine leg, pulled and hooked (in his early career) and he played every single one of these shots with as much class and style as any one else in the world. He was a connoisseur's delight.

Miandad also played all the shots but he was anything but beautiful to watch at the crease like Border.

3. Gavaskar was an opener. This is not a position that has as many greats vying for the spot as the middle order where Miandad operated. The world has seen great, near legendry middle order batsmen operating in the same era in different countries but rarely more than a couple of really great openers. They attract a different type of admiration and Gavaskar came from a country known for poor openers and poor record against fast bowling.

Miandad had greats even in his own team like Zaheer Abbas who were revered more than him let alone in the world. Ask Pakistanis who is their greatest ever middle order batsman and Miandad may not come out as the clear winner.

4. When Gavaskar settled down, he looked like he was never going to get out. He was the immovable object. Miandad also played long innings but he kept the bowlers interested. His style made him look more vulnerable (a fallacy as many bowlers found out) and the bowler was more frustrated by the sheer audacity of the man rather than the impossibilty that the task of bowling to Gavaskar must have looked like (except during a couple of series against Imran).

On top of this came Gavaskar's records !

Its not just the stats its the type of records.

He broke Bradman's record of highest number of test centuries. The record had stood for decades.

He not just broke the highest ever test runs but went on to become the first one to take career runs to five digits. It seemed a strange sight those 10,000 runs against his name then.

His first ever test series, though against a weak Windies side, was amazing. Perhaps the greatest debut series ever with 774 runs in 4 test matches.

Yes Gavaskar is and will be considered a better batsman by history but statistically speaking that would be an unfair conclusion. However, there could be other criteria, subjective some would say, which may show him in superior light.

As an Indian, I hated it when anyone dared to say Zaheer was a better batsman than Gavaskar and would have screamed if they said Miandad was (not many said so though) but I must admit that there were many occasions when we looked at Miandad and said to ourselves, why cant Indians be like him ? And, that in those emotion charged times, believe me, was a HUGE compliment.

Does Gilchrist play the majority of his career in Pakistan then?
I really hope you were being sarcastic, because he was obviously referring to Gilly's LBWs in Australia.

8 times in 60 Tests, while Gavaskar was LBW at home 10 times in 65 Tests. It's a pretty pointless statistic.

One word - aesthetics.

Watching Gavaskar bat was akin to studying a thing of great beauty - a work of art - his bat was a brush and the innings a canvas.

Miandad was different - no less effective but much, much more workmanlike, like the team working on the Forth Railway Bridge.

The end result was the same - something valuable got painted very well indeed.

Hopefully, otherwise you'd look mighty silly after saying Pathan can't bat at all. ;)

How is that important?
Because if he ever was, there was usually a riot or something. So umpires simply didn't give him out. I believe he never got given out LBW in Pakistan in Test cricket.
