Eh, not sure. Sachin has a sort of Godhood here, for over a Billion people. Don't think that many people even watched a glimpse of basketball.
Cricket is a more popular sport than basketball

India’s population is bigger than the entire population of North America, Europe and Japan
I mean, this is a really poor thing to use here. Grasping at straws. Cricket (as much as I love it) is very restricted in popularity to a few countries in the world. Basketball is a growing sport with a worldwide appeal, second only to soccer when it comes to team sports.

Europe + N. America = 73 countries = 130 crore people

Ind + Pak + Ban + SL + Afg = 187 crore people

Saying basketball is popular in more countries does not mean much when cricket is followed much more passionately by more people in our countries

Cricket has more fans. Just Googled a few lists and Chatgpt - ed to be sure, and sadly couldn't find any scientific source in a minute, but almost all the lists had cricket with more fans than basketball. It's in general thought to be 2.5-3 Billion for cricket and 2.4-2.7 Billion for basketball. Basketball is probably more spread out Geographically, but on sheer numbers cricket isn't anyways behind.

Basketball is not only popular in Europe and North America.

And yes, it does. It has a far more worldwide appeal than cricket. And thus so does Jordan over Tendulkar. Which was sledger’s whole point.

So yes actually, not that much difference (relatively). And basketball is far more widespread and growing at a much faster rate.

Cricket is growing just fine nowadays IMO. Basketball is probably growing faster, but currently it is not more popular than cricket.

I personally know more cricket fans than basketball fans, so I agree this must be correct.

Nah, it's US Media bias more than anything at play here. If just announcing someone as GOAT was enough, Beckham is the Greatest Footballer Ever (For Coronis, Beckham doesn't makes my English AT XI 26 man bench).

Or Muhammad Ali. As an icon, Ali is greater than all bar Péle, but he wasn't arguably the best boxer ever.
Jordan. Ali. Pretty much every greatest sportsperson list made by Americans is dominated by these two

Ali is a great boxer and maybe even the greatest ever but the way they hype his impact outside the ring and on society is ridiculous.

The rest of the world does not care about the Civil War protests like Americans do.

8-)

Jordan is iconic and influential in a way that transcends/transcended the sport he played. And sport in general, for that matter. Outside of India and countries that play cricket barely anyone even knows who Sachin is.
This is the post you guys responded to. Its completely correct. Then you guys try to claim Tendulkar is as iconic and influential in the same way? Outside of India, no, he’s never seen anywhere near that level. In fact, outside of India, he’s not even seen as the best player in his own sport. lol

And pretty much every greatest sportsperson list made by Indians would list whom? And how many made by non-Indians would feature Tendulkar at/near the top compared to how many made by non-Americans would feature Jordan at/near the top? I wonder…
