Sutcliffe is distinctly a better opener than Gordon. I will say this though, there was a time in the 80s where Gordon was doing awesome and his average after a decent number of tests was around 50 odd. Then he fell off a cliff. B4 that fall, Gordon rightfully was in the discussion with the big 4.

I feel like he could’ve been a contender at that point but for his failings in Australia. He had a great series against Australia at home in 84 and a great series in England and then was very poor against the same Aussie attack down under.

Greenidge loved his cut shots, in Australia where the bounce is so high, playing cut shots before you adapt to the bounce is very risky and probably left Greenidge open to catches I reckon. Probably something psychological from the 1975-76 massacre as well.

Kirsten, no. He did his best work in the middle order and wasn’t a standout as an opener during his career.

Tier 3 definitely No? averages 52 as opener, even if it comes down I don't see him falling below 48-49, had a very good Ashes in England in 2023 too, was good in the 2022-23 Indian BGT too, above Warner probably.

Hanif’s definitely the best of all the names in your third tier imo, definitely comparable to some of the names in your second tier too I’d say.

Hanif is probably indeed the most skillful in tier 3, don't really think he's necessarily lesser of a Batsmen than someone like Sehwag either but eh I got Sehwag lower than most.
