What is your view on Gavaskar??

Not in terms of his cricketing ability. But his career as a cricket personality (commentary)?

He is a polarizing figure to say the least, and has said many controversial things over the years. How will history remember him? Has he been net positive or negative for the game ?

I absolutely hate him. Has agenda towards each and every player. Shamlessly baised towards mumbai players while bashing others prefers individual milestones over victory of team( in last match vs pak was asking others to slow down so that kohli could get his hundred ) totally hates Australian and english( imo not a big fan of these teams either) while shamelessly sucking up to pakistanis( he might have been freinds with imran and javed but sucking to your arch rivals while crying about aussies doesnt make sense) while i respect and adore him as batsmen( our first atg) and as one who thought indians self respect as comenteter and pundit he is a bommer who must retire

I can only talk about him as a cricketer.

Probably top 10 openers of all time, top 25-30 batters of all time (I don't really have a list, just making a guess).

Above par in ODIs, nothing special.

Was not bad once upon a time, but should have retired from the commentary box some 15 years ago. Even back then, both as a columnist or a commentator would keep harping on his pet peeves (England bashing, perceived lack of integrity from the Aussies, standards of cricket from lesser teams today); the phrase "give it a rest" would come to mind. Didn't help that he effectively came under the BCCIs roster. Complete dinosaur today - must be disheartening for younger folks who have better commentary chops but won't be allowed anywhere near a mic.

Enjoyed his work as a "presenter" - in the late 80s, there was a series on Doordarshan called "Sunil Gavaskar presents" in which he took you through highlights of several classic matches (not necessarily involving India). My dad recorded the whole thing on video cassette, absolute gold. A few years later, when I was just old enough to start "getting" cricket, those episodes were a proper gateway drug. For that I'll always be grateful.
