Root should always bat no.3 , the Jamie Smith experiment is just so dumb , you have to earn the right to take a great players position..
I actually quite like Root at 4 in this team. He's not the best at taking advantage of the power play and he's better than our other players at keeping the score ticking through the middle overs.

The issue is that Smith is very new to ODIs, pretty new to LA cricket in general, and entirely new to the #3 role. Maybe he can learn to play it, but tough to be expected to learn a whole new role in a new format in your first international tournament.

The shot he got out to there though was symptomatic of the whole "he's got a free shot at it" jargon. He's a better player than that, didn't need to charge the spinner first ball. Have a look then attack.

This has been really impressive from brook. Scoring early vs wrist spin is his biggest issue in ODI's. Doing it easy here with basically no risk.

The win predictor at 79% Afghanistan seems a bit odd. The bookies have England as 4-6 favourites.

But maybe it knew Brook was about to do something stupid.
