1991 tours - all those bowlers had worse record in Aus pitches than Mitchell starc (26 AVG)
Only tour against wi- in 1997/98 -poor old man Walsh averaged 70+ , poor old man Ambrose averaged 30+ , and retired soon after.
what kind of ******** nonsense is this?

Curtly Ambrose 1998-2000 — 98 wickets @ 18.33

Courtney Walsh 1998-2001 — 166 wickets @ 21.57

these are not "poor old men" lmao

Both of those things have caveats too, Sachin's 10/12 yr peak from 93-04 is comparable/arguably better to both Viv's and Smith's. He just doesn't 3-4 consecutive big years as they do. His are more spread out.
Sachin not having a big big series can be a small issue but he just didn't play enough big series of 4/5 matches. He did go big on multiple instances, for ex 2007/08 BGT in Australia where he scored 490+ runs and was given out wrongly twice. He also scored 400+ runs in a 2 match bgt series once as well.
The only argument for sachin over Smith is another peak after 35.,
Sachin was lucky he got the most batting friendly era ever in late 00 era , where top 7 averaged 40+ , and only 1 bowler averaged<25 i.e dale Steyn from 2006-2010 period.
Steve Smith is playing in the most bowling friendly era ever.
So longevity doesn't matter.

also, Merv Hughes and McDermott both average 26 in Australia, Paul Reiffel was also a capable bowler, Shane Warne is Shane Warne, it was a good enough attack and the ton at Perth was high quality.

Poor old man because all the 4 matches played in dead rubber tracks.
No?

The first pitch might be a little spicy, but the second track had ****ing 90s Kumble take a 5fer, Ambrose and Dillon both got wickets, Barbados was also extremely spicy, with even Venkatesh Prasad taking a 5fer.

What is real argument against Steven Smith?
He played 98 out of 114 Tests against SENPI
He is playing in a bowling friendly era
He had arguably best 5 year peak since Bradman
He has had quite a few monster series
He has scored 10000 runs so longevity isn’t an issue

I'll wait to see how he ends. He legit has a chance to end up with a sub 52 average.

His peak is still very self contained, and he also did have plenty of easy runs against hopeless lineups in 2010s Australia, which was so flat until 2018-19 people started complaining about the spirit of the game.

Why you including Pakistan in there. Anyway Smith is easily one of the best since Bradman. But here the comparison is Tendulkar. There doesn't need to be any obvious glaring chink in Smith's armour for him not to be no 2

I mean How can you say he played against more depleted side like sachin for about 15+ years?
