David Gower vs Alastair Cook

Who is the better test batsman?

love Gower but he doesn't have the body of work to go over Cook for me.

wow never knew Gower barely played in NZ, he definitely did have the upper hand on Hadlee in England tho

It's interesting that Gower is clearly rated a rung below Greenidge, Lloyd, Crowe and indeed Gooch too on here. Fairly similar numbers to each in a similar era. Home conditions not particularly easy, didn't hide down the order and rack up red inkers.

I suspect his average v WI is the main reason why and that's partially why I've always rated Gooch ahead of him, but Gower did well against them away at least. Not a total failure so could clearly handle them to some extent.

I myself would probably rate him 5th out of those 5, but rate him higher than the median and would rank him ahead of Cook.
