impossible situation. i am no spark or spikey and haven’t put as much thought into this as them but i genuinely reckon a big part of why bats in this situation don’t hog the strike is because if they do, and they aren’t *perfect*, they’re going to become victims of the australian public’s impulse to criticise anyone who has a crack

it's 100% the issue. it's selfish to turn down the single. I think it's selfish to protect your rep instead of trying to do your best to win the game. they need to get to at least 150 and that wasn't happening in singles.
