Hammond never faced pacers close to what Gavaskar did.
He did face some special spinners though.

And re your statement. Neither did Hobbs or Bradman.

Sunny also did happen to fill his coffers vs less than splendid attacks, as did Hammond.

I would like to see either list.

And would challenge the credibility of both, especially the latter though.
The first one is kinda perfectly shared by a few:

Marshall
McGrath
Hadlee
Barnes
Murali
Steyn
Imran
Ambrose
Warne

So 9th here.

And the latter:

Don
Hobbs
Tendulkar
Sobers
Lara
Gavaskar
Smith
Hutton
Viv
Hammond

And I would say you will be horribly wrong to challenge the credibility or either here really.

Sunny had some Great stuff against some splendid attacks as well, which some people tends to forget smh. And while Hammond faced some Great spinners, Gavaskar himself was a top player of spin. And Hobbs and Don just blew away their opposition in ways never before or since (+ pitches for Hobbs).

Marshall. Hadlee. McGrath. Ambrose. Steyn. Imran. Donald. Garner. Akram. Lillee.

As great as the two spin legends, I would pick the pacers over them and most of them have a better record in India as well.

Post War, Gavaskar is around 6-7 among batsmen

The statement wasn't post war though.

I don't think he has a credible argument to be rated ahead of

Bradman
Hobbs
Tendulkar
Richards
Sobers
Lara
Smith

And most (including myself) rates Hutton ahead of him as well.

All of said batsmen has an argument to be the best after Bradman, what would Sunny's be?

Gavaskar didn't really excel against those pacers to the degree I originally thought.

. Is Hutton better?
I just checked out Len Hutton’s centuries.

Except against Australia, there are really no recognisable bowlers in any of the teams he scored centuries against.

Not really.

Sachin. Smith. Sobers have an argument.

Viv & Lara don’t.

Maybe I am rating Hammond too highly though. Is Hutton better?
It's close for me, but not close anyways near for me to place Hammond above.

Re your first point, he excelled against Imran both home and away like no one else, had a Great series vs the quartet at home and another vs Holding and Roberts away, a Great series vs peak Thomson away and an ATG one vs Botham, Willis and Underwood away. His failures includes a 3 match series vs Lillee (scored a 70, given a bad out, in a successful 4th innings chase), a 3 match vs Hadlee (scored a 72 away against him in the previous series, averaged 43 at home) and a 5 match vs quartet (averaged 30).

I don't think any of them have arguments to be over Hobbs and Tendulkar (except yk, Bradman) unless you put way too much emphasis on peak (which is silly to me)

WI had Ramadhin and Valentine, two pretty great spinners who suffered from pad play.

It's a mixed record for Gavaskar frankly. But I may end up having him in my ATG XI anyways as I have doubts over Hobbs and don't want to be generous to include Barry.
