Sachin never had the peak Steven whereas he did it at a lesser peak for more number of years.

Sachin avged 60 from 1993-2011 though, which included both peaks and troughs. To do that for 18 years, is just mind boggling stuff

Viv’s peak was between 1976-1988 and he barely played Test cricket in 1977, 1978 and 1979.

you do realise the whole reason Sachin wins over Viv is longetivity right? also, Viv's peak was 76-81, where he had ATG tours in England/Australia and Pakistan against great bowlers. in 1984 he had an eye surgery that messed with his batting IE reflexes but he was still the best bar maybe Border.

also, Barrington isn't top 15

Tendulkar didn't have as dominant a stretch of his career where he averaged 75-80 over the span of several years like Smith did. Also never had as many huge series where he picked off hundred after hundred like Smith in the ashes/India 2017.

Mohammed Yousuf had better peak than Sachin in mid 2000s yet nobody compare with him.Yes I do think few years ago Smith when had better average is better than Sachin (if he bring his form back and play similar fashion for 3-4 years he will be above Sachin) but peak means nothing if you are inconsistent

I don't pretend longevity is the overriding decisive factor.

The top tier each have their own plusses and minuses. Each is recognized as a top bat of their era. Each have impeccable stats with no real weaknesses.

Tendulkar: Longevity of worldclass performances over variety of attacks

Hobbs: Longevity of worldclass performances over variety of conditions

Sobers: 10 year absolute dominance

Viv: ATG Arguably greatest peak ever and ATG dominant series

Smith: ATG peak and ATG dominant series

For those who include Lara: Best in the zone player

Their weaknesses:

Tendulkar: Lack of dominant series

Hobbs: Unprofessional era

Sobers: A bit of a home basher

Viv: Lack of consistency outside peak

Smith: Overly friendly home conditions and lack of playing against ATG attacks

Lara: relatively poor against high pace and underwhelming away.

It would be like if Kohli suddenly went on a huge tear for 5 years and people started calling his peak from 2015 onwards.
