WTC 2025 Final : Qualifying scenario

Simple scenario for Pakistan to make it (assuming nobody gets any over rate penalties)

India 3 def Australia 1
West Indies vs Bangladesh who cares
England 2 def New Zealand 1
South Africa 1 def Sri Lanka 0
Pakistan 2 def South Africa 0
Pakistan 2 def West Indies 0
Sri Lanka 1 def Australia 0

Pakistan 2 def South Africa 0
Pakistan 1 draw West Indies 1
Sri Lanka 1 draw Australia 1

Okay had another look. England is definitely out but while still slightly possible Pakistan need to win all 4 remaining tests vs South Africa and West Indies plus have this happen:

Cricinfo: "Sri Lanka lose 0-1 in South Africa, and draw 1-1 against Australia; India lose 1-2 in Australia; and New Zealand lose 1-2 against England, then Pakistan's 52.38% will be enough for a second place behind Australia."

Pretty unlikely given India are already 1-0 up vs Australia
I just posted a couple of the other scenarios in the thread. Like I said they’re unlikely and all results will have to fall their way but they can still possibly make it.

They did their best with the cards they were dealt.
Well actually they didn't, coz they didn't send a proper team to NZ.

The qualification process for the Final remains a mess. Using over rates to help decide it is like using yellow cards to determine the Premier League. Individual series remain far more important to teams (and fans) than the WTC.

South Africa pretty much confirmed then? Well done to them.
Based on who they have on the schedule at home its likely. Unless Pakistan can surprise them. NZ still have a decent case if they can win at least one test and lose only one. Australia could knock India out of contention but I don’t think India can given Australia gets a shot at SL next year.

Looking more and more likely to be SA vs Aus/India.

There’s still a possibility of Aus vs India but SA would have to lose at least one test at home vs Pakistan. Possible, but unlikely. Australia can afford only one more loss against India at most and still be in with a real shot, which will come down to how they go in SL.

The team that played the least amount of Tests, sent a B Team to NZ and didn't play Eng or Aus at all, absolutely deserving Finalists for this farce.
Hmm I don't mind the NZ jibes ( it was a D team btw) but what does playing England or Aus have to do with it?

It's not against SA, just the WTC. Don't see how you can really judge a League Table when teams don't play all others. I think it would be fair to say that this cycle has given SA a fairly friendly schedule.

Because the big 3 play amongst themselves each cycle, you will always get teams who only have to play one of the big 3 once per cycle.

It's a common consensus that that WTC is flawed in its implementation but I like the context. I don't think it's right for an international captain to say he doesn't care about it though. Teams outside of the big 3 need context to Tests. If SA vs SL didn't have some sort of WTC context would it have even been a blip on people's radar? I dont think so. Stokes is obviously talking from the perspective that the Ashes is the pinnacle for him and his English team. Well, what's the pinnacle for SA then?

Stokes is just being petty at being forced to bowl their overs sooner. Every other team is doing a far better job of this than England. Maybe the problem is not the rules, huh?
