There was a good game at OT where he and Jimmy brought us back into it when all looked lost against New Zealand. I don’t remember him doing much else. 07/08 weren’t memorable years for England though, to your point.
Those years after 2005 and before the Strauss team do feel a bit lost.

2006 was SL first - where Flintoff broke himself bowling 50 odd overs at Lords and we ended up drawing that series after losing on a wicket at Trent Bridge that could've been lifted from Galle. The Pakistan series was a weird one - Harmison had his one good test post-2005 on a perfect pitch for him at OT and Pakistan did a Pakistan collapsing on day 5 at Headingley, then there was the ball tampering test at the Oval. England won the series 3-0 despite giving up 445, 538 and 504 in first innings with Yusuf scoring 202, 193 and 128.

While no one was looking, Ryan Sidebottom sneakily had a test career. So did Tim Ambrose.

I really did like Sidebottom for a while there tbf
He was unfortunate that when Prior first kept for England he was rubbish and kept dropping stuff from Sidebottom.....which I think was how Ambrose ended up getting a few games (which still seems bizarre because Ambrose left Sussex as he (and everyone else) knew Prior was massively more talented).

I’m surprised Panesar is even a debatable point. He did have a great tour of India in 2012 of course but otherwise was pretty meh after a good start. Leach I can see both sides.
Re Panesar, I don’t dispute that ultimately he was somewhat disappointing, he largely had to bowl against tougher batting lineups than both Leach and Moeen. Warne made a pertinent comment about him playing the same test 30 odd times, meaning he didn’t evolve. Even so I reckon he could have padded some stats in Asia as Leach has essentially done if he had bowled against some of those same lineups.

Leach has only padded his stats in SL, to be fair. He averages less in England than he does Pakistan, and his average in India isn't much below the England average.

I would personally add his 2021 series in India because he played on 3 real friendly surfaces for spinners. Not blaming him for cashing in but I honestly think he’s very ordinary when not bowling in favourable conditions.

79 wickets at 28, including 5 five-fors. He was an absolute demon in the run of Tests against us in 08. Underrated, if anything I reckon - bizarrely had a 22-match career across 9 years that didn't include a single Ashes Test.

The 9 year career is a bit misleading though isn’t it. 20 of them came in between Ashes series and the one after was a weakened side away to Bangladesh

Well yeah it is, given that lone 2001 appearance. I didn't see that when I looked. But if you looked on paper here's a guy who averaged 28, never seemed to have a sustained period of underperformance across the two years he played Test cricket, then didn't play again. Especially for NZ fans, we thought he was a world beater. Interesting that Onions was preferred in 2009, and they didn't want to carry on with the variety that Sidebottom brought as a LAer. But I can't remember back to the exact circumstances. My laboured point is I saw him bowl live on the 2008 tour, especially from behind the arm at Hamilton and Napier on that tour, and he looked absolutely dynamite.
