2024–25 NZ domestic season

Seriously impressive (and quick) 5 over spell by Fisher today.

I particularly like the ball from over 45.4 when Schmulian is playing his shot when the ball is already about half a metre past the bat.
Plus those bouncers.

Yeah, rough around the edges but he's got the right attributes as Baz would say.

Paywalled Press article about Mariu who turns 23 next week. Must be close to a call-up in the next 12 months.
I'm all in on this kid. Can clearly play, loves the game, wants to be successful at the longest version, and I think it's relevant that he's a well educated guy who has priorities in other parts of life, too. I think that only helps someone to know what success looks like, the hard work to get it, the ability to concentrate to get it, and the fact he seems to be tailoring his game around being successful in the long version.

If his season continues the way it is, he should be playing in Zimbabwe or at the very least on that tour.

I've wanted him to be fast-tracked into the environment for 12-18 months, although injury has held him back.

I really hope he's not going to be an Adam Milne. The injuries, exclusively a white ball player, never threatened to get on a Test field. I look at Adam Milne and it was a career that spanned 50 matches in both LO formats but it really never went anywhere of depth. And now that ODIs are looking at being shoved out, anyone of that ilk is really going to be creating a shallow pond of impact.

Fisher could be a Mark Wood type at international level, if we handle him right. Or he could be Billy Stanlake.

Should put in the caveat that this is the first stand out performance by Fisher in about 2 years, though. From my memory.

He had that stand out NZ A tour of India (no public video of it), and then in the first gamerof the Plunket Shield season he was awesome. Cleaning up Wellington at the Basin with yorkers. but then was injured for the rest of the season (The Kuggelijn/Tickner test bowlers summer).

And then last season he was middling, and middling again this season so far until yesterday.

But .. pop it while its hot.

There will be a test match next week at his home ground, where Keith Richards will say goodbye yet again on his very own personal farewell benefit series.

TBH, there is the complication of the spinner coming in anyway at Seddon Park. So, probably wouldn't happen even if Stead wasn't re-enacting a Weekend At Bernies.

Baz would have been playing fisher instead of Southee
Yeah I was thinking this yesterday. When Latham played a game for Canterbury earlier this season, Fisher came on with the old ball and induced a mini-collapse that set up an easy ND win in a game that looked likely to drift to a high scoring draw.

If Stokes went back to domestics and watched first hand as a young quick with a good record bounced out Durham on a flat deck, he wouldn't hesitate to make a gut call to bring him into the squad, and Baz wouldn't need much convincing either.

Took 21 @25 last season, very respectable stats, especially given he did the bulk of his bowling in the batter friendly month of March. Seasons best of 6/45. This season before the latest round he took 10 wickets in 2 games at 20, mostly bowling with the old ball. With his spell yesterday that's a record of 35 @ 22.7 since the start of last summer. Very tidy.

This bloke William Clark just scored a century and took 5 wickets in an innings for CD. There are certainly good emerging players coming through.
Can imagine Baz casting his eye over Mariu, Fisher, Foulkes and thinking what he could do with them in his squad. Some people see a glass half full and think about all the possibilities that the team can be enhanced with a paceman like Fisher, others like Gary Stead see a glass half empty and think "if I pick this guy he might fail and I'll look silly".

Good to see Ashok take a 4-fer after a slow start to the season, and in a match where Younghusband already took an 8-fer. All nice dismissals for Ashok too.

That was the one where he took the 4-fer at Chinnaswamy. The main one I remember is Sarfaraz being caught behind for a duck.

'Central Stags allrounder Will Clark proved deadly with the bat and ball in the Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts at the weekend.
The 23-year-old has written himself into New Zealand's first-class cricket record books after joining a very short list of players to have celebrated their maiden five-wicket bag and maiden first-class century in the same match. Stepping up in the absence of injured Josh Clarkson, Clark captured 5-62 with the ball on the opening day and also raced to his maiden century, 109 off 130 balls, in the second day (Sunday) of the Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui.'
