See here we go again, England are just about to finish off NZ, who just came off sweeping India and i give India very little chances of winning in NZ. And England just lost to Pakistan who were swept by Bangladesh who just drew away to WI who themselves drew away to Australia. I say all this to say that there's no clear cut number 1 atm.

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah, there is no clear #1 right now and this has been a most open WTC cycle. Just dont know if its good for the game.

Also with the T20 gen well in play now all over the world, you are going to see a lot of T20 style hammerings only to see the defeated team come back and hand out a hammering of their own the next game and so on. The idea of batting time and defensively has totally gone out of the window, so batsmen are either gonna dominate or collapse with very little in between and with pitches becoming more and more result oriented thanks to the WTC system, we are going to see a lot of one-sided results but very competitive series and tables, if that makes sense.

Yeah games haven't been close, it's just one side dominating for most of the match. I can't really think of many good close games recently, maybe the final match of NZ vs. India?
Yeah and funnily enough India seemed to be in the game far more in that series than the scores indicate. But again, one bad innings or one great innings with the bat really seems to set up the game and result these days.

Makes perfect sense actually we've seen a few teams fold for under 50. Then at the other end, teams pile up massive scores in no time. We see NZ crushing India, and they themselves being trounce by England.

Don't forget South Africa who now have batters who can score test 100s

The second WTC cycle seemed to be rather one sided with very clear toppers, esp. India. This one has been far more open and even better than the first. Hopefully the next one they mandate 3 test series and it will be even more fun.

@honestbharani i kinda agree with a lot of what your saying here but you keep referencing the WTC......do you really think thats a decent barometer of where test cricket is at or where the top sides sit?

You definately make a decent point about the way individule tests can play out, but on the positive side aren't we seeing more completive series overall? 10 years ago no one was wining/drawing away from home......but now it's happening.

So Eng are currently the 5th best test side sitting behind SL who are 4th?
Let’s not overrate Eng. They lost in Pak right after Bang won in Pak and lost 1-4 in India in the same year NZ won 3-0 in Ind. SL are very capable of beating them in SL.

I'm not overrating England at at all.........recent results have thrown this thread all over the place and one thing that is abundantly clear is that there is no clear No 1 imo.

I don't think thats a bad thing for test cricket tbh.

I was referring to more of the cycle, as @Spark points out, than anything to do with the actual WTC itself. I think it gives us a nice way to group periods of series. And I was not making any remark on the quality aspect (sorry if I did, I have been out all weekend and am not re-reading a whole ton of posts responded to) but just that it is the reality of this era. Test series may end up being close or it may end up being one sided spankings depending on how many factors play out, but individual tests are more likely to be blowouts than not compared to previous eras. That was my point. :)
