Mike Tyson is probably the most famous sportsperson alive today. Even those who have never seen him fight would have at least heard his name. The name Tyson is synonymous with fighting and in many of our films have a character named “Tyson” who is often a fighter not necessarily a boxer.

Rohit probably has more fan base in India than Bumrah I think. Kohli arguably already tops Sachin, Dhoni has huge fan base in India too as far as I know.

Except cricket and tennis, I have rarely watched any others sports in the last 20 years.
NBA - The only names I know in last 20 years is LeBron James & some Serbian called Jokic(that too because Novak Djokovic talks about him).
F-1 : The last time I watched Schumacher was champion. I have no idea who has won and how many titles they have since then.
MLB - Babe Ruth. No idea about any other player.
NHL - Wayne Gretzky. No idea about any other player.
NFL - The greatest player can come in front of me and I would not recognise him.

The truth is unless you follow the sport you would not recognise any name regardless of how much they transcended the sport like media tells.

Anyway I think say, Basketball and Tennis (and begrudingly Soccer) are going to have names recognisable to many people who aren’t fans of the sport. Since the sports themselves are so worldwide. Its why everyone knows who Bolt and Phelps are.
Cricket is kind of right beneath them, not truly worldwide. F1 is a bit of a special case, since motorsport itself is almost classed as seperate to sport and some people even don’t consider drivers athletes (because they’re morons).
