For the majority of his career(1993-2002), McGrath played in arguably the golden period of fast bowling.

For the majority of his career(2007-2015), Steyn played in arguably the worst period of fast bowling and still excelled.

Steyn took 374 wickets(85% of his career wickets) between 2007-2015. No other fast bowler had an average below 25 or SR below 50 in that period. Dale took those wickets at an extraordinary average of 21.8 and SR of 40.8 and doing it in era when no one else could makes it even greater.
This argument falls flat when you realise how good Steyns home conditions were.compared to pacers like Wasim and even Ambrose.

in general, Steyn has supremacy in Asia and McGrath outside Asia, I really don't think Steyn was consistent enough throughout his career to claim superiority over McGrath, and McGrath's ability to chip away the best batters of the opposition mignt be unmatched in the 150 year history of cricket.
When McGrath wasn't taking wickets, he was usually bowling well and tight.

When Steyn wasn't taking wickets, he was more often bowling mediocre to crap.

For comparison :

4-Fers in Ind, Pak & SL
Hadlee : 11 in 13 Tests
Steyn : 7 in 14 Tests
Marshall : 7 in 19 Tests

5-Fers in Ind, Pak & SL
Hadlee : 5 in 13 Tests
Steyn : 5 in 14 Tests
Marshall : 3 in 19 Tests
Please exclude SL, they were minnows in Hadlee's day. The Indian team that Hadlee played also wasn't as strong (batting wise) as the one Marshall and co did.

That aside, he didn't have to share wickets as the other two did. Was watching a game against England where Marshall took out the two openers, 2 for twenty odd, never saw the ball again that innings. So the fact that he managed 5wpm during his peak is insane.

And yeah, Marshall never got to play any minnows.

Steyn in Aus was better than Mcgrath in SA. For his era he outperformed all contemporaries to Aus. Also Steyn is one of the best home bowlers(even after considering the SA pitches).
He out performed.

The ATGs though should also transcend. I understand the wicket totals and all, and the match winning efforts. But what if the in-between, he took quite a bit of hand.

And don't get me wrong, and I rate Steyn higher than most, and right there at no. 4, but he was never as consistent as McGrath, but then that was never his MO.

Shouldn't omit the point about his own helpful home pitches though. They were the outlier, and that's where he did best.
