All three close together. Think Cowdrey is the best bat between the three just.

Had a significantly longer career than both incl the first third of that in a tough era.

Did quite well when he batted top 3 so it's not as though he couldn't bat where the other two did. Averaged 60 overseas in the decade where Simpson played nearly the entirety of his career; Smith didn't have his away numbers hit by starting out in a tough era followed by playing on for ages.

Has a notably good record in low-scoring games too; in some cases v good attacks. While the other two were openers, Cowdrey did score a lot of tough runs himself.

Smith 2nd behind MCC and above BS as a batsman by small margins each way I think. Simpson's extra bowling and being ATG in the slips is an interesting factor though. I do think he's slightly overrated as a batsman on here, but if he isn't considered a clear level behind the other two as a batsman, I could see why one would rank him ahead of them as a cricketer.

Yeah been doing a bit of a rework on Cowdrey myself. Definitely a batsman whose overall average doesn't represent the overall quality of the batsman.
From 1962 to 1965 he maintained an average of almost 70 (not whole career average but only throughout those years)
