Yeah, NZ would've struggled to defend 300 in these conditions, but still a little disheartening to see them chucking in the towell and spreading the field after about 5 overs.

Well done England, and especially Carse, that second innings 6fer was brilliant work on a flat deck. Very nice bowling from Woakes as well, made very good use of the wobble ball to knee-cap any remaining hopes NZ might've had.

For NZ, it's a shame we had to phase back into the dimension we're we play sloppy sub-par cricket. I preferred the other one where we beat the GOAT home-track bullies with one arm tied behind our backs.

So having had a look at Smith - seems a very tidy player, but he's still going to need to improve a lot more over the next couple of years. Hopefully he can take some good tips from King Henry in that regard. Obviously could've been a very different game for him though if he hadn't been let down by the rest of the team so badly.

My concern around the catching is: was it some freak one-off anomaly, or is it indicative of a decline in standards that will be difficult to rectify in a hurry?
This could be quite a horrible series for NZ fans because Southee is halfway out the door, Blundell seems to be lost at sea, Conway is a problem again after a brief revival in India, Latham is still rocks more often than diamonds, and Rachin is prone to tossing away good starts….I can see a lot of frustration with individual and team performance is still on the cards.

Our fielding has been on a steady decline ever since Stead took over as coach. Prior to that we’d been one of the top couple of fielding teams in the world dating back to Rixon’s time in charge.

Well, that's 3 consecutive test losses at home for us, 2 vs Australia and now 1 to England. And then throw in the losses to South Africa and Bangladesh recently too and our home record is not looking so flash. And in all those games slackness, poor fielding and dumb cricket have played a big part. It therefore gives me great pleasure after a month away to resume the call to SACK GARY STEAD

Well the NZ way of thinking is “we performed well in India, therefore we must retain Gary Stead”.
Whereas a more logical way to look at it is in a broader context: “if these players are capable of white-washing India in India, then why are they underperforming more often than not under Gary Stead?”
