Yeah it's a weird one either way. Perhaps it's a minor fracture and he knows he won't be playing the next match or the Pakistan series? Wanted to give it a go to help the team make the WTC final.

He could have done that tomorrow in his usual batting position though?

It might be worse in the morning. Swelling can increase over time, which will cause more pain, and the inflammatory response has just started to kick in. I would also assume he was on something while batting, which helped, plus the adrenaline.
