2024–25 NZ domestic season

Unpopular opinion: Bowes deserved more opportunities 💀 His last ODI innings was half century against Pakistan in Pakistan. Smart guy who would continue to develop. That said, I'm a Robinson fan so was happy to see him given an opportunity last season.

I didn't mind Bowes in ODIs as a depth option that much but I don't think he should have been playing the T20s as well. Having a punt on Robinson in that format made a lot more sense IMO.

To clarify, I don't necessarily have an issue with Robinson getting an opportunity.

But gee, there are a fair few guys coming through now with records like Robinson, Allen, JFM, Bethell etc who have records where they're averaging 20 odd in all formats, might have one century to their name (Bethell none) and these opportunities come up. Again, I don't necessarily blame the management who give these opportunities, it probably speaks to some level of sense.

I dunno. With 3 formats now, the selection landscape has changed and doing 10 years on the domestic circuit while also showing any sort of promise is no longer a thing. Players are being selected sooner, because more players are being selected.
The 10 years thing is happening all the time now though with that '92 generation. Macewell, McConchie, Rippon, Cleaver, Bowes.

Yeah, fair enough. The only thing I'd say is subjectively none showed any particular early promise, with the possible exception of Cleaver.

Guys like Nathan Smith - as Steve pointed out - are somewhat of an outlier these days (which I guess is my point). A guy who looks to have the goods, but has waited until 26 to debut.

On Smith, I was in the same sphere as Adam Hose (Worcestershire, and Welly for a few games) the other day, and he couldn't speak highly enough of him. As a cricketer and a bloke. Very much looking forward to seeing how he goes tomorrow.

There's been a general trend against selecting far too many bowlers recently – so it's finally happened. Otago have selected three bowlers.*

Apologies: just had to get by profuse happiness out to the world. Meanwhile, ND thinks six pacers is a good idea. I sincerely hope Otago win.

* though Georgeson is really more of a bowling all-rounder now even though he bats in the top six, and Otago still have six bowling options. I still want to have my win.

Neither ND or Otago have a spinner in their 11 for this round, at Seddon Park.

That is a bit strange.
Otago have useful part time spin from Foxcroft.

ND I think a mistake. Fred Walker might have only bowled a few overs at Hamilton last week, but they might regret their playing XI decision when Cooper and Raval need to bowl a few overs in today's evening session. And they lose another point or two from slow over rate.

Napier looking like a 4 day old pitch already. CD with 2 good spinners.

If it lasts long enough. Abbas bowled by a ground grubber on Day 1.

Would love to hear rational for why Santner isn’t playing in this game.
Santner perhaps asked to do special test prep by NZC, monitored slow build up of bowling workload.

Nicholls and M Bracewell also not playing. The rest of the ODI / T20I tour squad either with NZ test side or playing Plunket Shield except for Milne who is playing T10 in UAE.

Llew Johnson a sepcialist batsman at 8 is just so .... wierd.

Makes me even sadder that Hart 0.1 overs in the B games. There was/is a spot their surely.
