2024–25 NZ domestic season

... and looks like Auckland have decided they don't want to get caught in rush hour traffic on their return from Hamilton ....
And Southee still can’t pick up more then two wickets in a match…

I went down and watched the end of play last night. Hampton looked like he was bowling quicker. Going to be a long series for Tim I think.

I reckon J McKay myst have about 75% of his career wickets from bouncers. Therefore I enthusiastically clicked on CR McLachlan b McKay for a rare occurrence of what must obviously be a 'pitch it up' wicket.

50 for Ajaz

Otherwise as commented above, a lot of bad second innings dismissals this round. Though excuse W O'Donnell as that ball from Hampton seamed a mile, might even have missed leg.

Uh I'm confused why didn't Wellington declare at or before tea? Incredibly perplexing tbh. It looked like throughout the first session today both teams were playing to contrive a result. Otago would have always taken a shot at 240 off 35 overs. If it's because Kelly wanted his hundred...

They did call it off during tea.

But, should withhold 1/12th of their match fees IMO. That is $3500 for 12 players for a session of cricket.

Getting paid like they're in a subsidized trickle-down professional pyramid.

But captains acting like it is amateur 1980s. Knocking off for early beers.

Only 8 games a season lads. You could have declared and bowled at 2 young openers (Parkes and Cumming) for an hour. And contributed to the pyramid that is the reason you're paid.

Piss poor.

Calling out this wastefulness.

Jamal Todd with 2 super quick T20 hundreds in a day.

Good enough for an IPL contract, you'd think...
Was picked for the Dubai league a couple of seasons ago, alongside Ollie White, for some bizarre reason.

Let's see him do it for a couple of seasons against decent opposition (I know you were being facetious).

Tim Robinson is another example of someone being picked too quick for a flash in the pan moment - something that happens all too often now. We used to see Australian domestic batsmen compile a decade of run scoring and not make it, now if you put together one - and not even that much in T20, potentially - higher honours are yours.

I dunno. With 3 formats now, the selection landscape has changed and doing 10 years on the domestic circuit while also showing any sort of promise is no longer a thing. Players are being selected sooner, because more players are being selected.

I don't mind a Robinson-type pick, if I'm honest, and I certainly prefer it over a Bowes-type one. If a player shows the right skills and temperament, stick with them. Maybe Robinson isn't up to the task, but there would seem to be more upside to him than a 30+ year-old journeyman like Bowes.

And for Robinson and Bowes, I mean anyone of their ilk, not specifically them.

Yeah, all fair points. I know the landscape has changed and I'm not necessarily bemoaning that. It has to be remembered, though, that there is still a place for people like Michael Bracewell, Grant Elliott back a while back, even Nathan Smith is about to debut as a 26-year-old. We didn't know Bowes wasn't going to cut it, he had to be given the opportunity.

England are really pushing the envelope by picking guys with questionable records like Bashir, Josh Hull, Bethall, Rehan Ahmed...too early to say whether that will be a winning strategy. I wouldn't all of a sudden want to see Matt Fisher, Ashok, Mariu etc thrown in based on promise.
