*Official* Warne vs Murali Discussion

Not any ways close to the load of Murali. And he bowled to relatively weakish SL line-ups in comparison and had no way near the sample size to suggest him matching Murali. Murali dominated peak Indian batters in SL. Saying Warne could had matched Murali had he been Sri Lankan makes as much sense as saying Warne won't get a Ranji game had he been Indian.
Warne has the record in SL to back up this assumption. And he will be facing Zimbabwe and Bangladesh too not just Australia if he plays there.

Murali did better against India in SL because the pitches prepared in India were scuffed in areas of middle off, not off, designed to neutralise his offspin. If Murali faced India in Aus though, I would guess he would be about as successful as Warne was.

Bottomline, no success in Aus is a deal breaker for Murali.

I have said multiple times why Murali didn't succeed in Australia. It's wrong to hold it against him as kryptonite.

Bottomline, only one of them dominated India anywhere and it sure wasn't Warne.

Sure I give credit to Murali for doing well against India at home. But ultimately it was his backyard. My fundamental issue with Murali is his performance away from home. Or in Australias case, lack of performance.

Yeah except a major hole in Australia.

To pretend that isn't important, the best team in the world and the area most difficult for spinners to achieve, is just wrong.
Context, my guy context. SA is equally bad for spinners and had a comparable batting; Murali rumbled there.

So has Warne. But Aus is a critical differentiator in my mind.

Tbf, I suspect with a couple more tours Murali would have done better but I see him likely averaging in the 30s in Aus overall, since those conditions really arent suited to him.

And?? Warne averaged in 30s in the Australia for the whole 2000s.
He didn't. And he had a whole career in Aus before that. Murali also played in Aus in the 90s.

Murali averages 70 in Aus. Let's say he played two series more in between 95 and 2007. Let's be honest, realistically he is not averaging less than mid 30s.

His 70 average has a ton of context. He got to bowl at Australia in the 2nd innings ONCE, in a run chase Australia managed 4 down. Clearly overbowled in the 1st on all 4 instances because others were shittier. No matter how great a spinner you are, only so much can be done in dead flat pitches on the 1st innings. He played 4 games, 2 each in 2 series separated by 12 years; pre doosra in the 1st and with the cheating Aussies unironically calling him a cheater and creating immense mental pressure over him. There is so much context behind that 70.
