England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

Phillips has a very similar sort of batting record across the formats and I have this bad feeling that he might just be a 31-34 average guy given that's his average in ODI, List A, T20, T20I and tests. But then he averages 40+ in FC so this post is just deliberately bad analysis and I have wasted everyone's time by making it.
yeah. that's my real fear for him and why I was quite keen on the attitude of getting Will Young in there, particularly in NZ conditions.

at some point I slipped off the cricketnation email and as a result I keep missing tickets, they're already gone!
Might be able to give you my ticket for one of the days at the Basin. Probs not the weekend though, though might be willing/able to sub you in on Sunday afternoon when I've had enough. If you're still around Wellington around the match, keep in touch and I'm sure we can sort something out.

GP 80 odd against Aussie earlier this year made me think he does have the good to average 40 plus. He looked like a genuine normal top order batter, and cos he wasnt with the tail he played normal I think he is batting to low, basically most innings he is with the tail andhas to farm strike and be aggressive, he is good at this, but he must bat at 6 above Blundell.
Think as soon as he gets his first hundred he break through (I wasnt a fan until i saw his 80 odd against Aussie)

I’m happy to give GP some credit in the bank. He should be batting ahead of Blundell for sure and probably always should have been. I just suspect that every so often he’s going to be dismissed in a frustrating way - either due to mode of dismissal or the position of the match. Regardless, I feel we’re not making the most of his potential by playing him as a bowling all rounder.

Im guessing NZ are slight favourites?

Looking forward to England having to face O'Rourke. He was troubling the Aussie batters with his pace and bounce which says a lot.

If Williamson scores 2 or 3 100s and NZ can keep Root quiet, then NZ is a chance at 3-0

Hopefully his younger brother who is more traditional (less aggressive) joins him in the test side in the next couple of years.

It's interesting talking of how Phillips is always left to bat with the tail.

England replaced their perfectly good wicket keeper because they wanted to replace him with someone who was good at batting with the tail.
I don't have a strong opinion on this, but it is interesting where someone else is thinking of those extra few percents and implenting their theory.

Phillips should bat ahead of Blundell because Blundell is cooked. I don't think there is a problem with Phillps batting with the tail, but I do think there is a problem with Blundell. And Phillips should probably bat ahead of whoever Blundell's replace is because that guy will be a pup and doesn't need the extra pressure of starting at 6 with the required weight of runs.

Usually we don't need to think about this sort of thing because those 7 and 8 positions are usually filled by aggressive batters anyway by nature. But NZ did invert the positions of Watling and de Grandhomme from what I would consider their natural/orthodox ordering.

I wouldn't be surprised if Blundell excells on NZ decks against mostly pacers (bat and gloves).

He's always been very rocks and diamonds with pronounced strengths and weaknesses.

If Ajaz can be a purely horses-for-courses player then maybe players like Blundell should be considered the same

What days are they?
Sat and Sun NZT. Will start at 11am NZT (so in just over 13 hours). Is against mainly young players who aren't in their provincial 1st class teams and a chance for the English to get rid of cobwebs and have a break from golf.
I assume there'll be livescoring and perhaps video on nzc.nz

Sods law we arrive Monday in Queenstown and go to Christchurch on Wednesday. Currently waiting to fly to Hong Kong from China so cricketweb is the only site I can actually get on that I usually use.

This NZ Presidents side for the warm-up looks pretty bad - domestic A players or youth. Not surprising they're 38/4 already.
Johnson going from internationals in Sri Lanka one week to captaining extremely fringe players the next is an interesting series of events for him I spose
