Is interesting how both have their best performances at 3 yet spent the majority of their careers not batting 3. (5 for Richards - also a ton at 4 and 4 for Hammond)Who was the 2nd best first drop batsman of all time.
Who was better suited for the role and better overall?

Barrington worth a shout imo. But again, he didn’t play the majority of his career there, just like Wally and Viv.Headley also worth a shout imo.
Highest averages at no 3 (min 30 innings):
Bradman - 103.63
Barrington - 77.24
Hammond - 74.78
Headley - 71.17
Viv - 61.54
Sangakkara - 60.83
Lara - 60.47
Williamson - 58.19
Labuschagne - 56.81
Ponting - 56.27
Others over 50 - Dravid, Kanhai, Dexter, Younis Khan, Bill Edrich, Ian Chappell
Amla, Kallis, Graveney, and Gower all in the 49s
This is an even bigger plus for Ponting, not only did he stay on in the team, he didn't migrate further down the order in an attempt to help protect his numbers.Barrington worth a shout imo. But again, he didn’t play the majority of his career there, just like Wally and Viv.
For blokes who mainly played 3 I’d say its between Sanga, Ponting and Dravid. Headley worth throwing in there too but its always a little hard to rate him.
I don’t think retirement or migrating down the order is about protecting numbers in most cases - its more often about younger batsmen who may have already a “specialist” position they bat in and the player/teams confidence they can adapt to a different position. This is an even bigger plus for Ponting, not only did he stay on in the team, he didn't migrate further down the order in an attempt to help protect his numbers.
Here’s a documentary totally worth watching,Anyone here have footage of Hammond batting?
