Would be really handy to have had an 'A' tour happening this spring.

Last domestic season progressed enough newer names that this time it wouldn't be 11 guys exactly same ages as the test incumbents.
How are these guys supposed to get better?

Surely no one at NZC thinks we are going to produce Test-class players in the Plunket Shield. So instead, we're relying on county sides to pick them up, or they somehow think the likes of Fisher, Ashok, Hay etc are going to come on by training in an all-weather net at Lincoln.

In another sign of the declining status of one day cricket, the domestic season kicked off today not with the Plunket Shield but with the Ford Trophy.

We had a two 4-day game and three 50-over game tour scheduled in Bangladesh this month for NZ A, but it had to be called off over safety concerns, with the government falling there.

:cool2:

Hay's exposure to international cricket especially important in light of incumbent wicketkeeping form in all three formats.

Clarkson, Duffy, Foulkes, Foxcroft and Robinson all there too - it's a very new/inexperienced squad. No Rachin, Mitchell, Conway, Williamson, Southee, Henry - I'm keen to see the new players perform though it's almost an A squad tbh.

Predictable squad to cover both T20I (e.g. Robinson) and ODI (e.g. Nicholls). Hay picked as keeper ahead of Cleaver, assume start of a long career for Hay, don't think we will see much of Cleaver or Seifert again.

Except for Ferguson, the players who turned down NZ / domestic contracts were not picked (Allen Seifert Neesham Boult Milne have all been in T20I squad in the past two years), or not available as prepping for NZ v Eng test series (Conway, Williamson). Perhaps only Allen and Milne are still in contention for future T20I World Cups.

I'm guessing milne is still injured as always. Lockie probably getting games because

-sears is injured (also, as always)
-lockie will likely feature in the champs trophy coming soon, leading the attack with henry

Could also make it to the t20 wc in 2026 where he will be 34 and a half. Still 50/50 on that but yeah 100% he won't make it to the next odi wc. But with milne and sears's durability record nzc may have to keep relying on lockie for as long as possible.

Question...would this have been a great chance to intro fisher into the setup? Is he injured? Pretty low key series so perhaps pick him instead of duffy. Just don't see much with duffy as i feel he's in the tickner kuggelejin lister category of mid. And we need to be move on from sodhi ffs. Sucks that addy ashok is injured.

Henry nicholls should be shot from a cannon and launched into orbit at this point. Stead will find any possible reason to weasel him into a nz shirt. Very young/inexperienced squad is probably his reason this time.

Positives: Glad to see foulkes, clarkson, foxcroft and robinson being persisted with. Really looking for some notable performances at this point from Foxrcroft and clarkson. Not extremely young or inexperienced anymore so they need to start hitting thier straps in an NZ shirt. Extremely pleased for nathan smith....has anyone deserved a callup more in recent memory from our domestic scene?? Excited to see Hay as well, especially when Blundell is declining at a rate of knots.

Canterbury cricket facebook when naming the first side three days ago - "Unavailable due to injury: Ken McClure, Ed Nuttall, Henry Shipley, Kyle Jamieson and Fraser Sheat", but no details.

There was some media commentary that O'Rourke had appeared as a like-for-like replacement for Jamieson as soon as the latter got injured, which I found weird as I don't see them as similar bowlers at all, aside from height. Shipley is far more a reserve Jamieson imo - shame he's not able to stay fit.

who's yahya zeb

another one of wellington's promising young players?
Think he’s transferred from Auckland if I remember names from provincial A teams correctly.

Yep. Sounds interesting. Didn’t bag a game for Auckland last year despite being on their contracts list, mind. Wondering if he’s a little mercurial.

oh okay, not much info on him at all online

pace bowler? bits n pieces pace bowler who bats? whats he about
Added a link to my previous post. ‘Aggressive pace bowler’ is the synopsis. Haven’t seen him myself though, so don’t know the reality of that. One of the Auckland brigade might know more.
