So for how long is he going to have to keep performing this consistently for you to change your opinion? Does any given wicket taking milestone change that?

Unrelated to that, how do you rate him as a batsman?

I hope you're being sarcastic because Kallis is imo a better cricketer than Ashwin.
Kallis is so overrated in such scenarios, he can't even bat quickly. And his bowling is much weaker of an option. And insert whatever else Subs complained about Kallis here.

I'm not Subs. Kallis a better cricketer than Ashwin. Who cares about his batting strike rate, we're talking about tests. And his bowling and Ashwins batting pretty much cancel each other out. Kallis is a much much better fielder. And batting wise, was effective home and away.

In relation to Ashwin? OFC, and it's not a comparison that makes any sense.

I'm not sure who else you would mean to compare to. Kallis was an extremely average bowler for his era. Generally better than at least one specialist in his own team, and a much stronger option than giving the ball to an Amla/Smith.

Donald was my idol growing up but can't ignore the weight of Ashwin's numbers and how pivotal he has been to India's standing (at least the Home part of it) for the last ten years. Don't think this is particularly close even now and the gap will only grow if Ashwin plays another 2 years.

Donald is an ATG test bowler, Ashwin isn't. Donald averages 20 in Ashwin's home conditions, Ashwin averages 39 in Donald's.

case closed.

You mean piling it on at home? It only changes his ranking relative to other non-ATG spinners with low wicket tallies really. Same way Anderson has a cap against actual ATG pacers no matter how many wickets he takes.

I would rank Ashwin ahead of a superior quality spinner like Swann simply because the latter doesn't have enough of a career sample.

Ashwin have a quality series (by ATG spinner standards, not his own low standards) abroad does change it though. Only then can we even begin to entertain bringing him anywhere near after Murali and Warne.

Let's see. He has a great opportunity this time in Aus.

there are probably like 30 ATG pacers and 2 ATG spinners, maybe 3 counting Bill.
I am having trouble to think of more than 25 ATG pacers really..... Let's see:
Marshall, McGrath, Hadlee, Imran, Steyn, Ambrose, Akram, Donald, Garner, Lillee, Lindwall, Holding, Trueman, Waqar, Pollock, Davidson, Walsh, Cummins. If you want to count as pacer, Barnes and Spofforth if you want. On including Anderson, Roberts, Rabada, Bumrah, etc.; you will have to count Ashwin, Grimmett, Laker, etc as ATG as well.

There is nothing more disrespectful to Warne and Murali than this.
Well, for the longest time many non-SC fans used to think having Murali in there was disrespectful to Warne (some probably still do) so not ruling out a token change of heart towards Ashwin some time in the next fifty years.
