Match #17 - Australia vs England - 8 June

Well that was terrible. As soon as Buttler was out we couldn't take advantage and Australia deserved their victory. We are in serious trouble and Scotland (of all teams) are likely to qualify as Aussies will play Scotland last game and you couldn't blame them for getting a result to make this happen

What a ****ing load of dross.

Johnny Bairstow should be nowhere near the ****ing sides

From a Surrey pov, my view of Jacks hasn't shifted. At county level, he's good for a lively 30 in these games but rarely goes on to produce something substantial. At this level, I think we're unlikely to see even that.
I think he doesn't know how to bat at 3. Let him open with Salt.
He went from his 50 to 100 in 10 balls in the IPL.
Buttler made a mistake bowling him in the 2nd over.

Why would you open with him when you have Jos

I don’t know that batting is your biggest issue. I think you’ve picked the wrong attack for the conditions. Seems that guys who can mix up their pace and bowl cutters are better served on the decks rolled out so far. Once you’ve got the wrong attack and got for a lot of runs you’re always up against it in a t20. Chasing 200 is never easy, and I don’t know that it was really a 200 pitch. By all reports England mostly bowled woefully.

and tbf a decent number of England fans on here pointed that out before the first game

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah benching BOTH Curran and that other left arm opening bowler seemed silly. One of them should have played over Wood or Archer and maybe both could have played.

EDIT - Just got his name. Topley.

I can't fathom picking Wood in these conditions. They're tailored made to neutralise him IMO

Yup. Beyond that, Bairstow and Duckett are also best opening, and Moeen, Livingstone and others shouldn't be in the top 6. So we do have a problem finding enough people to bat at 3 to 6.

Totally agree, and it was painfully obvious from just the 10 overs against Scotland. They were badly missing a pacer who excels with the new ball (Topley) and someone who can mix it up (Curran). The right players are in the squad, they're just not picking them for some reason. Australia got 30 runs more in the powerplay than they should have had on that pitch, and that was pretty much the difference at the end. It wasn't a 200 pitch, and I don't think England batted that badly.....they were just chasing a well above par score.

It was a pretty good batting deck

Australia scored 70 runs in the first 5 overs (14 per over), and 130 off the last 15 (8.67). It was more a 175 wicket than a 200 but losing the plot early on pretty much cost us the game.
Yeah we had an awful start and then brought the rate down pretty well. I’ve never subscribed to ‘this is a 175 v 200’ sort of theories anyway because I find it a little meaningless. But it was a good batting wicket. Doesn’t change anything in terms of what we got wrong.

Yeah, I think we're agreed on what and where it went wrong. It'll be interesting to see whether the England Management think likewise.

Another big concern for me is Rashid. It seems to have gone largely un-noticed that he's been pretty rubbish for the last year.

What’s the go with Harry Brook? I thought he was supposed to revolutionise cricket or whatever but he seems to have gone backwards at a rate of knots. Has he just been worked out as a hack slogger or is he out of form/ returning from injury or something?
Do you hate Gill more or Brook?

Finally England encounter conditions perfect for "bits and pieces cricketers", 25 years after they stopped picking them.

They’re both myths, but it’s neither of their faults they’ve been yapped up so much. Gill seems a naturally less likeable bloke/ much worse **** but Brook’s a hack slogging Pom who people seek to think will end up a gun test player despite not playing anything above chest height. Then again, that’s also said about Gill and he’s precisely the same too. So its a tough one to choose.

maybe I like Gill failing more in LO stuff - his WC final failure was a dream come true because it was so inevitable. And I think I like Brook failing more in tests. Yeah, I’ll run with that for now.

If I had to choose between them overall, I probably dislike Gill more because he’s just so obviously a far, far less likeable person than Brook, who has that goofy, more-to-be-pitied-than-despised face. Gill needs a belting tbh, he’s a petulant spoiled brat. His carry on in the wtc final was hilarious. Like he’d have gone on to make 12 if he hadn’t been given, and he was clearly out anyway. Cry more, ****.

Overall I haven’t really given it much thought tbh

I share your sentiments about Gill since the 2023 WC final
