Bad cricketers who played too long

Derek Pringle. Good CC man but surely even he must have been surprised to play
74 times for england over 11 years, the last when he was about 35. Not one of
the fittest players either.

He probably did (in this Pringle appreciation thread some suggest he wasn't quite test class) although he was effective when recalled for the test series against the West Indies in 1991 and had an excellent 92 World Cup taking 3 for 22 in the final - with a bit of luck could have had Miandad lbw and may have been a WC winner.

Played a season or 2 of grade cricket

Good grade player but that’s about his limit if he was playing under Australian conditions as he wasn’t quick enough

Defreitas was very ordinary in grade but impossible to judge accurately as he didn’t seem to be all that fussed

Paul Jarvis was deceptively quick but had chronic injuries. Shame as he had real talent and is a good guy

Moeen Ali has played 138 ODIs. Averages 24 with the bat and 48 with the ball.

He's managed to play 3 World Cups where his record is pretty much identical to his career record, but once you exlude Scotland and Netherlands he goes to 14 games, 9 wickets, bowling average of 65 and batting average of 17.

Waste of space. Somehow got carried to a WC win where if he featured in the finals England would've probably lost.

He wasn't really dropped for the *final* - he played in 5 of the first 7 group matches, then he (and Vince) we dropped, and England were then unchanged for their last 4 matches.

Not good stats from Moeen there but, I don't mean to damn with faint praise; he would be close to being the best bits and pieces player ever. Really is an incredible number of international matches played in respect of the skills he possessed.

Bad Test cricketer too. His Ashes record is abysmal but kept getting picked based on performances against minnows

I really don't think so. Dhoni, though was no way as good in Tests as in ODIs, as both a batsman and a captain; is still a top 10 keeper bat of all time.

I really never understood how Dhoni made runs in Tests. I was Big Mad whenever he did.

But it was real, at least in the right conditions.

Dhoni interest in test cricket seemed to peak and decline once he reached no.1

So, if I may ask, who was the best English player that you played with/against in grade cricket? My impression was that in the 90s, that there were many English county players who went there and found the level really challenging and not much of a drop off from county cricket.

Also Marshall, Imran, Wayne Daniel, Winston Davis and Evan Gordon

Marshall had retired from international cricket but was only about 34 & still really quick when he wanted to be

Evan Gordon was lightning.

He was a South African in Sydney studying medicine and ended up playing Shield in one of his 2 seasons but went home when he graduated

It was very different back then as grade was played over 2 Saturdays with very little Sunday cricket so everyone was keen & available so matches were competitive

Wow that suggests a 'what might have been' with Gordon. I suppose he must have left it all for a career in medicine.

Yeah, I think he gave cricket away in his mid 20s after a back injury to focus on it

Keep in mind that SA was still banned at the time and there was no money in domestic stuff
