Ummmmm

Viv and Sachin will argue over the 4th position, Sobers will stupidly argue to bowl more and will miss curfew. Morning Bradman is doing about the latter btw, lol.

Marshall is setting how own fields, Warne possibly as well.

Don't see that many other issues tbh.
I don't think the ATG XI will really have much of dressing room problems; Viv batted at 5 more often than 4, Sobers is a great guy you just need to give him some freedom and well .... Not many issues really. Bradman will work great as the captain of this team, he has a big enough personality to his performance to be imposing and he great tactically.

Ponting always felt like the successor to IVA. Dominant no. 3 in an ATG team, belligerent at the top of the order often setting the tone. Brilliant in the cordon and in the infield and captained their teams till the end of their respective dominant eras.

If we're taking VIv from '78, yeah I think he should bat at 4, think he would agree as well. The drop down the order was post captaincy if I recall correctly.

No 4 kinda belongs to Tendulkar imo, he batted almost exclusively there for 200 matches. Viv batted at 3 and 5 more than at 4. And like, we are taking the median players not the peaks.

Oh, which year would that be?

You pick the player based on median, but the player is then selected at his peak.

What does this have to do with Ponting or Lillee?

To be honest, I don't know what makes a great captain, so try not to factor it into these discussions.

I remember creating a thread asking about Graeme Smith's bona fides in this regard. Is it a combination of record, tactical skills and man management?

Record has more to do with the skill

Tactical skills are subjective and can be a little luck based on if it works out

Man management I'm guessing is worth less the higher up in quality one goes?

Does one need to be great at all 3 three or any two of the above?
A good captain takes a team and improves their performance.

A great captain is somewhat subjective and has to do with leadership abilities, man management, tactics, etc. It depends on what the team needs.

Imran was great because he the team's performance dramatically improved under his captaincy. He introduced a somewhat meritocratic process, united a historically divisive team, groomed new talent and left behind a worldclass team,

They were 2 Strongest Teams in Cricket History - 1980s West Indies and 2000s Australia, Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting were Star Batsmen for their Teams.
Those are very flimsy similarities. When you think of Viv Richards you think of a batsman with uber attacking approach to batting and superb eyesight. No one thinks of the team he played in as the unique thing about him. I'd sooner accept Gilchrist or de Villiers as his successor.

In 2000s Ponting was the Best Batsman in both formats of the game and he played some greatest ODI Innings at Wanderers Stadium - 140* in World Cup Final and 164 against South Africa. He was more consistent compared to Gilchrist. An Excellent Fielder. Best No 3 Batsmen of 2000s, Won 4 ICC Trophies 🏆 as Captain. In 3 of those Tournaments he was no 1 or no 2 batsman of the tournament. 2011 World Cup India vs Australia Quarter Final he almost took the team to Semi Final with a Century (Sachin and Yuvraj spoiled his plans). Viv and Ponting were like Mafia Bosses of their respective eras. Both scored century in World Cup Finals. Both led Teams which were World’s Best and Both were Run Machines of their respective decades.

I think when Ponting was in his prime and looking like he would surpass all comers to be the best since Bradman people regularly compared him to Richards

Yes they did. He was a run machine and ruthless with it, almost disdainful
