What is your definition of a match-winning innings?

Any innings where your teams chances of winning the match are far, far higher than it would've been if the innings hadn't happened is of a match winning calibre. The result of the game can still go either way it's dependant on too many other factors.
No it can't. It's not a match winning innings if you don't win the match

Here's a famous example, 1981 Botham's Ashes. England followed on and were 7-135, still 92 runs behind when Botham hit his 149* off 148 balls to give England a 129 run lead. Ausralia was then bowled out for 111 to lose.

Did Botham have a match winning innings or was Willis's 8-43 the match winning bowling?

Actually it was match fixing because Lillee bet against his own team

Without Botham's 149, Willis's 8-43 would've never happened.

Of course, though, in football or rugby, the winning goal/try is usually reserved only for scores that separate a deadlock or put their side in a lead near the end of a match. So perhaps a more accurate, if limited, definition of a match-winning innings is one in the final innings of a match that sees a side over the line, like Cummins 44* in the first Ashes test last year, or Woakes 32* in the third.

Very interesting way to look at it
Definitely is. Maybe our working definition needs to be adjusted. All innings are match winning innings, just for different sides. This philosophy applies to everything in life if you really think about it, aside from Ted Cruz. Everything those beady eyes encased in a porcelain skinned, "GET AWAY FROM ME" whenever he's within 100 yards of a women head lay there gaze on are cursed to endlessly suffer within the 7 levels of hell. He also liked incest porn and blamed it on an intern, which is pretty beta.

Another category is when one batsman plays the only significant innings of the match.

In the first innings of the first-ever Test, Charles Bannerman retired hurt on 165. The next highest score from a teammate in either innings was 20. The highest for the opposition were 63 and 38. Australia won by 45 runs.

A more recent example is Dimuth Karunaratne against South Africa at Galle in 2018. In the first innings he carried his bat for 158*, then scored 60 in the second, a match aggregate of 218. The next highest match aggregate on either side was 50 (du Plessis 49 and 1). Sri Lanka won easily by 278 runs, but without his efforts the result would have been in doubt.

Lots of humorous stuff in this thread but it does speak to an essential truth: wins matter more than anything else. Players who contribute to wins are worth more. Back to the wall knocks that stave off defeat are the 2nd greatest type of knock - the sort Athers played periodically.

Of course it's a team game and you can't win unless the bowlers take 20 wickets - but records in wins is hugely important.

It's been mentioned but Kim Hughes 100* in 1981 vs that WI side is amongst the greatest such knocks ever.

Only one definite ATG has a worse average in wins than their overall record.

I didn't get most of this but I'm sure it was great

Looking at many of the examples given, it seems that often it's something that is best judged, or can only be judged, in hindsight.
