Bad cricketers who played too long

Ali TT

International Vice-Captain
Ajit Agarkar? Geraint Jones?

I think there will be plenty of mediocre players who played long careers in mediocre or worse sides, but not sure those guys played "too long" because it was unlikely there was a better alternative. The sweet spot for this thread is the players that selectors inexplicably won't drop or keep coming back to based upon some misplaced hope said player will "come good".

Definitely tough to drop someone averaging 40+, especially given how mid WI batting was. Easily a top 25 WI bat of All Time.

Top 25 for a particular nation is barely an honour but he does just get in.

Didn’t Adams get hit & wasn’t the same thereafter?
One of the first summers I was aware of cricket existing Jimmy Adams came over as captain of the West Indies, with an average of ~60 in Test cricket, and then proceeded to be hopeless with the bat all series

Ahead of Strollmeyer for me. WI do have the 2nd strongest batting line-up, and thier top 25 is only second to Australia and England. Also Sarwan should make it ahead of Rae, and so does Solomon.

That would be Lahiru Thirimanne. Ironically he actually did have a blaze of glory at the end, scoring two centuries in 2021 and lifting his test average from a truly dismal 23 after 36 tests to as high as 27.85 before ending on 26.43. Even given Sri Lanka's paucity of batting stocks I could never work out how they kept giving him more chances when he'd been utterly abysmal.

Adams's average after 14 Tests was 86.40; for his last 40 Tests was 29.48 (and 25.80 for his last 30 Tests).
Given he was still averaging close to 30s, I don't think WI had any suitable replacements. Just look at the averages of others WI tried back then.

Yeah, imagine only being the 25th best in your country at something. ****ing disgrace - if I was him I'd be so embarrassed I wouldn't even get out of bed to avoid the shame of being seen by my fellow countrymen and women

He was played in the wrong format. Pretty good ODI bat, horrible test cricketer. But no one comes close to Kapugedara though

There was an English (maybe Scottish) poster on the old board I was on who used to moan about the quota system whenever South Africa had a match. Players like Mulder were always a good rebuttal to his nonsense.

The same guy would probably nominate Moeen for this thread.
Unless the objection is that racial discrimination should have no place in selection (a complex topic when there has been historical discrimination against a given group). If it's on the basis you are missing good players as a result a better argument would be Kevin Pietersen, Devon Conway, or maybe Kyle Abbott at 2015 WC.

In terms of players who stayed too long I would say the Waugh twins (although both are great players obv).

Derek Pringle. Good CC man but surely even he must have been surprised to play
74 times for england over 11 years, the last when he was about 35. Not one of
the fittest players either.

He was in ODIs. 127 games, average of 28, SR of 60, not a single ton.
These stats aren't great, but weren't as bad back then as they are now. Saw a similar thing said about Craig McMillan the other day. We are definitely judging some older players more harshly looking through a modern lens these days

Now those stats would be truly terrible, but back then they were sort of "meh"
