Bad cricketers who played too long

Forget tests, Xavier Doherty playing 71 fc games is a mystery when he was a very average club bowler

On Gatting, very talented (as most are) but had a strange technique where he picked the bat up after the bowler had delivered the ball

Sitting duck for lbws before he got his eye in as always late on it

I was going to disagree with this until I realized he played all the way till 2010. That's about 4 years past his 'peak'.
Who else did they have? Ajmal's actually three years older than Kaneria - seems he didn't develop his "skills" until quite late. Rehman was the other one around at the time, same age as Kaneria. Seems they simply didn't have alternatives.

Norman Gifford's 15 tests may not sound a lot, but it now seems very odd that 13 of those came after the arrival of Underwood's far superior SLA on the test scene.

He was about as effective as any of the Aus domestic spinners during his career other than SOK tbf. Wasn't easy being a spinner in the Shield. An average of 40 was decent

Vincent was such a golden boy/project of NZC. On a personal level, I like the guy, but as a cricketer he was given the red carpet treatment by the selectors, and **** knows why.
Because he was obviously class. McMillan said in his book that Vincent was the most talented shot maker in the side (I'll have to double check this after work).

I see Devon Smith played 43 tests over 15(!) years for the Windies and averaged 24. I don’t recall a lot besides him being in and out out of the side. What’s the story there?

I suppose Ken Rutherford averaging 27 over some 50+ tests is a similar case on paper, even allowing for his horror start in test cricket.
