Who is the greatest bat with a sub-50 average?

No one dismisses runs against India. Pakistan was just way tougher with a well rounded attack testing every aspect of the game.
Three of his four conventional dismissals on the lean tour of Pakistan were spin.

He has the credentials v spin in India for this to not be a noteworthy problem.

Kanhai is a bit awkward to place. Lot to like. Very tidy country/opposition distributions, batted top 3, good longevity etc. Has crazy good peer/observer rating and is glorious on the eye test on footage.

But two of the four teams he faced were consistently feeble and West Indian tracks in his career were very flat. He probably should have averaged 50+ considering the standards we're setting for him as someone in ATG convos. I don't think he's a significantly better bat than Colin Cowdrey but he seems to have a much bigger rep now.

I would take him over Hayden and Chanderpaul though.

Just taking a surface look, in the timespan of Kanhai’s career (min 2000 runs), you’ve got Sobers, Barrington and Pollock at ~60, then you’ve got 11 players who average between 47-50 so it wasn’t really like he was a standout amongst his peers.

Cowdrey averaged the same as Kanhai across Kanhai's time, with tougher home conditions. Did alright when he batted top 3 too.

He did get to play New Zealand unlike Rohan but Kanhai didn't have to bat against West Indies who were the strongest bowling side of the 60s.
Yeah Cowdrey’s probably a bit underrated. I’d say England and South Africa were the strongest bowling sides of the 60’s.

I removed the second paragraph because it's pretty much redundant as Cowdrey had to play SA (obviously not Kanhai's fault) and he actually played a lower percentage of innings v NZ/Ind/Pak than Kanhai did, which were obviously the weak bowling sides of the time.

I forgot SA because I was going through Kanhai's resume. Think Peter Pollock and John Snow have the edge on Wes Hall. WI had a good balanced attack but their success in the 60s was perhaps as much because of their batting.

It's interesting to note that Inzy averaged 50+ when playing for Pakistan. Unfortunately for him, he played 1 match for World XI against Australia in 2005 and scored just 1 run. If we discount this match, Inzy averages 50.16.
For Pakistan he averages 50. That's an ave of 50 IMHO.
