NZ domestic season 2023/24

6 tests in Asia, so it's good to see one spinner staking his claim, as he always has to.

I wonder if we will go with 2/2 or throw more responsibility on Ravindra/Phillips and go 3/1 with them making the second spinner.

Going to be a rough 6 months for O'Rourke if Southee calls it at 100 tests. Reckon Boult feels like he's scored enough retirement bucks?

For better or for worse, I don't think Southee's planning on retiring anytime soon. I think he's dreaming of a 2025 WTC swan song.

He's gonna need to find 10 clicks by next week then. He's bowling club pace to Australia on free to air. It's the most public banana peel he's had in his career probably.

Stead's not going to give him the boot, at least not for a while. Took him 2 years to finally work up the guts to have the conversation with Wagner. Southee's only really looked truly past it this season. And that's before you consider his curiously excellent bowling record in Asia. My guess is we'll see Southee announce his retirement before the final test of the England series next year.

Yeah, it'll be that Asia tour that will keep Southee on, especially with Jamieson out. Going on a 6-Test tour where the most experienced bowler is Santner is a gamble hardly anyone, let alone Stead &co, will make.
I'd be interested if any left-field choices are made for the Afghanistan Test, or if they'll go in full strength as a curtain raiser. Say, if there's an A tour before then & anyone puts their hand up from there.

Yeah I expect business as usual, I'm just being hopeful.

Knowing Stead, I think if he brings in a new quick it will be the Duffman. He's the right age, with a long FC record behind him and he's having a great year.

Now to be fair this has been a bowlers season of cricket, probably in part due to all the inexperienced and/or substandard openers floating around, but Duffy is still #2 on the list.

Duffy looks like he's added a yard of pace this year, genuinely running in quick and hurrying guys up. I wouldn't have an issue with him being next cab off the rank. I'd say he's far ahead of Southee right now.

If Southee wanted to continue - and it's a big if - he needs to drop the other formats, and he's not going to. A 35 year old cannot find extra zip 16 years into his career, whilst captaining the side, touring in all formats and potentially playing a T20 league here and there. The oft-used comparison is Anderson, who I think I said hadn't played a T20 for 10-12 years and any ODI cricket since 2015 or so. So if Tim is REALLY serious - and if Stead had a pair - he'd say if you want this, prove it, and drop everything else.

Does Sean Davey get any love here? I haven't seen much of him, but his record is insane - 42 wickets at 19s - and has a Ryan Harris-esque action. Bloody good to watch

Didn't realise his record was that good, though it's a short career and he's already 30. Wonder why it took him so long to make a domestic team - looks like he was in NZ U19s a decade ago.

Yeah, it's a name I hadn't thought much of - I didn't even know what the S stood for. But I love his action

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Wasn't he the guy who had an insane 21/22 season then a classic second season syndrome in 22/23 and was eventually dropped (?) but ended up being more valuable with the bat than ball

Yeah got a buddy who was saying the same thing about him, definitely bowling 5k quicker this season. Said he’s really running in hard, hitting the crease man on a mission he reckons. I said last week you’d take him over Southee 100/100 nowadays but we all know they won’t happen 😑
