I personally have (for the 21st century) Smith > Hayden >/= Sehwag (i’ll take Hayden just) > Cook

Both Hayden and Sehwag had their worst records in NZ/Eng/SA (shocker) but Sehwag was worse than Hayden in those so yeah. Plus Hayden had a better conversion rate and higher rate of a 50+ score.

Khawaja gonna beat em all tho.

Yea I think Smith is pretty clearly the best and then you can rank the other three in any order. I prefer Sehwag for the strike rate.

Cook's not really an FTB IMO.

Would probably take Hayden out of the three though. I admit Sehwag's batting style is attractive but for where Hayden's record is flawed Sehwag's one is even worse.

Cook's a tricky one, he's definitely harmed by batting in England compared to Australia/India but I feel like he wasn't all that consistent either, like there were long patches where people were really questioning his place which didn't seem as apparent for Hayden or Sehwag. His raw stats are clearly worse even if he played in less favourable conditions as well.

Sehwag had the biggest highs of the trio. But also the worst lows.

He had a superior maximum performance threshold to Cook. But Cook clearly edges versatility. I always used to have Sehwag ahead because Cook was no great player of lateral movement himself and had the relatively milder upsides. But Sehwag averaging almost 20 when opening across England/NZ/SA (the toughest examinations for opening) is something I find tough to look past. If he had just been okay against swing, I would happily take him over Cook. But Cook was very stable if unspectacular in England, and brilliant in the subcontinent.

the subcontinent is far more relevant to his career. He played maybe 15% of his tests in these three places, it’s irrelevant.
This line of thinking is so odd. A player is judged based on his skill level and record across conditions. Your criteria is set up to benefit the best homebashers.

a player should be judged on what they achieved in aggregate over their careers whether home or away (I don’t distinguish). sehwag’s achievements are so great in the 65% of matches he played in the subcontinent the rest isn’t as relevant.

greatness can come in many ways - an extreme homebasher may have as much value overall as someone who is less good at home but consistent across conditions

Is Rabada better than Cummins?

rabada isn’t the greatest player of all time in his discipline in conditions where 40% of all test matches are played (and 65% of his testmatches are played)
Is Rabada better than Cummins? You didnt answer. And if not, why not?
