Miandad
Sangakkara(wk)

YK unlucky. Which spinner/s would come in if the conditions were right?

SH XI (Minus Bradman)
Smith
Hayden
Ponting
Kallis
Smith
Border(c)
Gilchrist(wk)
Hadlee
Warne
Donald
Mcgrath

Lots of tough choices here. Simpson and Lawry considered for opening. Chappell and Waugh in the middle order. Lillee's m.o. post back injury wasn't that different to Hadlee's so i decided on Donald.

ROW XI
Hobbs
Hutton
Hammond
Richards(c)
Lara
Sobers
Knott(wk)
Marshall
Verity
Holding
Ambrose

Hammond vs Headley was close. Went with the former due to his better record against Australia. Small sample size for Headley but meh. Picked Holding over Garner because i think Holding offers something very different whereas Garner overlaps quite a bit with Ambrose. Verity vs Laker is a debate that will run and I was deciding what to do with Barnes and ended up not picking him as I didn't know who of Verity and Holding to ditch. Richards is captain over Hutton and Sobers due to having captained three of the bowlers during his career.

Which is the best team?
Like the idea, but no need to exclude Bradman.

For the SC, would personally go with Younis over Waqar, but I just don't like the long tails.

Would probably go Garner over Holding, he's more accustomed to the old ball.

In that thread you could make an ATG country XI or some different XI with some weird restrictions or a team that haven't played in Test etc etc; i.e., any ****. This one is pure unadulterated AT Test XI.

What I find fascinating is that, despite the fact that we mostly disagree, that we would agree that most of us understand the game, and that in 2 pages with multiple 11s, not a single one was duplicated. And that's with about 3 or 4 unanimous selections.

Criminal lack of Ian Healy and Prasanna Jayawardene as wicket keepers though. Last of the breed of pure stumpers who happened to be good with the bat, instead of top order batsmen who could keep.

I would personally take a batsman who can keep ahead of a keeper who can sorta bat.... I think including Healy will cost most of the teams I made in the batting (though he still is in my 14th team); and well, I have Wridhimann Saha over Prasanna Jayawardene as a keeper....

Yes this is a small sample size, but it's been borne out before in larger samples, but the next time Red or whomever does the next ATG XI, really only have to vote for 3 spots

The 5th spot, realistically between Richards and Smith, with Lara always getting votes.

The 3rd bowling spot which is always between Hadlee and Imran, with again Steyn getting votes

And while it didn't play out in this exercise (I would imagine voting demos so far), Warne and Murali. Everything else is on lock down.

Basically falls under 3 categories.

Unanimous choices or all but.
Bradman
Sobers
Marshall
Gilchrist

No need to explain further.

Very much consensus selections, not unanimous but not that far from, and guaranteed spots.
Hobbs
Tendulkar
McGrath

All but assured.
Hutton.

Tempted to include Warne here, but I'm the previous vote he and Murali were very, very close. Hutton does have some competition from Gavaskar and the Sutcliffe loyalists (just a joke), but he always makes it. Well until Steve gets enough innings under his belt.

Interested to see the remainder of the the 11s
