Thoughts on Rohit's captaincy so far

Will preface this by saying it’s hard to attribute things to captain/coach/management.

Under Kohli we had issues related to selectorial blunders.

Under Rohit it appears to be allowing the game to meander and waiting for Bumrah to pull something out his arse.

Results wise it’s hard to argue against Kohli who led an extremely dominant home side that competed pretty alright away. Rohit hasn’t even captained enough series to build such a body of work.

Not particularly charismatic or inspiring, neither with much in the way of strategic genius. Can't think of many blunders from him though. Just rather average

I think he's a good captain, I mean he has reached finals and his sides have played pretty aggressive and attacking cricket.
He does not play for records and tries to lead from the front ..

I feel there are things holding his captaincy back which are out of his control..
Risabh Pant missing is huge for India for example, I don't think they lose if he plays

Comes across as a guy who waits for things to happen and if they don't happen, hope they will happen if you know what I mean. Kohli is much better in that regard especially when it comes to not showing negative emotions

I mean, there are arguably much better players who are just kept on sideline for various reasons. The truth is simply that, to play Test Shubhman Gill needs to play FC and score runs and come; and Shreyas Iyer is a lost case. Yet management is still pushing them. Cheteshwar Pujara is in a good form in Ranji trophy, Sarfaraz Khan averages 70+ in FC, Rajat Patidar has scored good runs, and still there are Ruturaj Gaekwad, Tillak Verma, Abhimanyu Easwaran, etc., even Ajinkya Rahane was India's highest scorer in WTC Final (his last match); but management are just pushing players proven in ODIs.

And he failed in quite a few matches by now. I think it's about time to drop him, and ask him to perform and come again.

I've never been convinced Rohit even deserved the captaincy. He'd barely his place secure in the Test XI when he emerged as lead contender. The Rahane situation and Kohli's equation with the board obviously helped his cause.

Seems to be one of the less enterprising Indian captains of the last 2 decades. Doesn't seem to take the initiative and lets the game meander IMO.

Preface by saying most people actually don't know what instructions a captain is actually giving his players most of the time

ODIs: Very impressed with Rohit's willingness to lead from the front and bat in an unselfish uber aggressive manner at the start of the innings. This was something he was clearly uncomfortable doing but still did it anyway for the good of the team and was a significant factor in India making the final (before laying an egg obviously). Deserves major props for it imo.

Tests: When the opposition is batting well, he clearly goes through the motions. And not in a "I just ate 7 vada pavs" way. Distinct lack of willingness to change things when it's clearly not going well. On the other hand, he took a huge gamble and brought on Prasidh to bowl in that second test in SA which could've cost us the game. Dumbest **** I've seen in ages.

I think there is a lot that happened around the same time that ended up being a detriment to Indian cricket.

• Ganguly's rise to power in the BCCI circa 2015 just as the Virat-Shaz era was taking off. Ganguly's ego issues and insistence on having his team mates running Indian cricket was not great for us. It did lead to good stuff like Dravid taking over the feeder systems but it also led to Kumble, who has never been successful coaching a side, needlessly coming out of nowhere and rocking the boat for the senior side.
• There was some knd of rift between Virat and Rohit that began during the 2019 WC. I dont think they fully reconciled till around the England tour in 2021 (When we went there) which meant there was needless delay in passing of the baton. It was always clear Rohit was a better white ball captain and should have taken over post the 2019 WC itself. Maybe Virat wanted to wait till the 2020 T20 WC as he had never led India in that format in a WC. But the whole process could have been lot more streamlined had they been on better terms.
• The whole issue with Shastri as a coach meant Dravid took over the side when no real succession plan had been put in place for the feeder systems. In fact, it became a non-issue in the eyes of the BCCI post covid for whatever reason. There was no proactive player management happening through and during the resumption of cricket as well, which resulted in so many soft muscle injuries for our bowlers especially.

There is more but I feel these 3 things happening at the same time has left us where we are. Doesn't help that Pant decided to be an idiot and not have a driver for a late night drive without any sleep. Or when Hardik decided saving singles was paramount suddenly during a WC.

Yeah I don't want to make this sound like an excuse, but losing Pant has been a monumental blow. He papered over the cracks of the failing top order and consistently played match turning innings in every series. Everyone has players missing in individual series ( England dont have Brook for example) but losing arguably your best batsman and keeper for what seems like it could be 2 years or more is brutal.
