Semi Serious Ideas to Re-Invigorate Test Cricket

Shady Slim

International Coach
1. T90. A maximum 4 day test format where each team gets a maximum of 90 overs x 2 to make their runs. So a team that's 5 down in the 70th would need to accelerate to make as many runs in the last 20, complicated by the new ball at the 80th (though maybe brought forward to the 70th to keep things spicy). Bowlers get a maximum of 20 overs.
sorry champion you're only nine years late to the party started by shady slim before he was legally old enough to drive and still used capitals
Fourday tests, to be from now known as 4Ds or 4DTs, put in to a world cup format,

The 4DT
-Four innings
----->One inning is each day
-The team that is the toss victor gets innings 1,3
-90ov/day
-If captains of a team do not get through their required overs, they don't have a fine. However instead of a fine, that amount of overs will be deducted from his team's next inning.
-After 90ov then what is going to happen is the same as a regular ODI or T20 once quota of overs is reached
-As per what would happen in a regular test, last day is able to go overtime
-For ties there is a super fiver (super over except it's five overs)
-For rain there is a system where the corresponding innings of the next team goes to what ever amount of overs the rain delayed team had
----->so effectively if australia bat the first innings but because of rain only get 74 overs, that is what the next team are going to get for the second innings but the third and fourth stay 90

2. Test XXII. Rather than fielding 11 players, you get 22, an XI for each innings that can play in either order i.e. the XI that bats doesn't have to bowl/field straight away after their innings is completed. Do you play no spinners in XI #1 but 3 in XI #2 as you expect the pitch to deteriorate later on? Strategy would be interesting. Also a lot fairer to fringe players, letting everyone get a go which is just nice imo.

3. Depth based boundaries for dingers. T20s are enticing because of the six boshing factor and big dingers. An artificial boundary beyond the boundary should be implemented using space mapping technology so that when a batsmen puts one deep into the stands they get a run multiplier to increase their score, encouraging bigger hits which are more entertaining, that could also see a side quickly dig themselves out of trouble with a shot for 23 runs.
I actually think the opposite.

Your proposals basically run with the idea that what defines Tests is having two innings. If anything I think that might unnecessarily elongate them tbh. What makes Tests Tests is that there usually isn't much time pressure. Three-day but one-innings games would feel heaps more like Tests than what you're proposing imo.

Ali TT

International Vice-Captain
Even distribution of ICC revenues, enabling WI etc to pay bigger central contracts (though they'd probably waste it)
Test fund
Cheaper tickets and better marketing to stimulate attendance - e.g. Indian venues should be forced to sell more single-day tickets
Better venues, especially in Asia
Friday starts, maybe Thursday, but definitely not earlier
Better overall governance (ha, in a million years)
Maximise revenue-producing viewing options globally
Re-establish Intercontinental Cup
NZT wanted semi-serious ideas, not these fantasies.

1.Overseas Team should decide whether they would bat or bowl first
2. Teams should be allowed to change their players after the Toss .
3. No over rate penalty if Test match has result
4. In case of injury to players in a match , teams should be allowed a similar substitute.
Agree nos 1&4

You're thinking like a nerd, you need to think like a capitalist where tv revenue is important and guaranteed game time for eyeballs. Terrible effort.

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
Test series in 2 or even 3 divisions with promotion/demotion every 3 years. Countries to have one series against each other within that 3 year time frame. Home/away venues to alternate as per Ashes.
Still have 'one-off' Tests between nations from different divisions to promote interest in lower divisions.

I'd make them last two weeks, ten innings each
I was just about to say this. Instead of a 5-Test series just make it 10 innings and whoever makes the most cumulative runs wins

Gets rid of the declaration part of Test cricket, so you'd have to make sure we got sporting wickets

This would be abused the **** out of

India already got away with playing Saha + Pant to keep and bat respectively with the concussion law imagine what they'd get away with if you could sub any player at any time if you can convince someone that they're injured
