NZ domestic season 2023/24

Just had a quick look at the TV one stream and like what I see. Kid is not only a keen striker, but isn't afraid to play the dinky dilscoop strokes etc & at 23 will likely fill out a bit more over the next couple of years & get a bit stronger. Good signs.
Yeah that was a seriously impressive effort. Intelligent player, doesn't overhit it. In all fairness to ND while I still think they bowled a pile of crap, it must be hard bowling to a guy that can hit you 360 degrees and does it so well.

Yeah **** it, Mitch Hay is my new favourite cricketer.
Bank this tag line for future cricket series if he becomes a well known blackcaps player.

“Mitch Hay while the sun shines”

Can well imagine some of the commentary team coming out with something like this.

Oh, and am I the only one interested in seeing the SteveNZ XI and regular updates on who’s in it?

Even if you aren't, I'm still going to indulge myself and post it

Anyone from HPCC or Saint Kentigern College gets in, so that includes Glenn Phillips (c), Will O'Rourke, Finn Allen and Dale Phillips (Danru Ferns dropped out as he transferred to Taka, dirty traitor). Also, anyone who is well above average looking or has an outstanding physique - whilst also being able to play - also gets in, which is part of the proviso for Will Young and Kyle Jamieson, although I did look to back those guys in early on talent. Ish gets in because he's a good looking fella too and is a hell of a good bloke to boot. Henry Shipley is in, too, he doesn't really qualify for any of the above but I just like the way he goes about it - plus a stevedor is a person who is employed to unload ships, so it all works well. Hay gets the gloves for as long as he wants them, dunno who was there previously. Nathan Smith is there, huge raps on him. And Zak Foulkes is a guy coming up quick to get a spot. Matt Fisher has been there in the past, but I think the way he's going he can carry the drinks

So to fashion it into a bit of a side: Allen, Young, Phillips.G, Phillips.D, Foulkes, Hay, Smith, Jamieson, Shipley, Sodhi, O'Rourke. Fisher 12thie

That was a disgraceful display of death bowling. I don't mind if guys get hit at the death, it's a hard art, but it was brainless. No plan at all. Allowing Hay and Nicholls to hit downwind, would go hole for one ball, miss horribly and hardly ever go there again, just a giant pile of rubbish. I am thinking about retraining as a death bowling coach, so many teams require my services.

Although the worst part of that innings was when Jeet Raval misfielded one through his legs and not only did the cameraman make it his obligation to find the only two Indian fans in the ground, the producer cut to it. Dire.
Not sure why Tim Pringle only bowled 2 overs. Disappointing return from Kristian Clarke who has done well in Plunket Shield earlier in the season and is a promising all-rounder.

Mitch Hay impressed the Aussie commentators on that A-tour. Looks like a Black Cap in waiting. One question - all these sports people called Mitchell (Santner, Drummond, Hunt, Dunshea etc), is this connected to David Hasselhoff's 'Mitch Buchanan' character in Baywatch?

I recall kippax tipping Mitch Hay's batting a few years ago (he wasn't keeping then). With a caveat on his white-ball batting.

The discussion earlier in the thread about the vaunted CD pace quartet from 2010 sent me on a wee trip down memory lane looking at the NZ team from the U19 WC that year.

Check out this scorecard. Reckon they had enough allrounders in that side? I count two(!) specialist batsmen, Latham and Cachopa, in the top six. I can't remember if Ben Smith was in the squad or not, but he got runs at the national tournament. Henry Nicholls and Tom Bruce were around too, but don't think they were in the mix for the WC team.
I think that 2-year U19 cycle is possibly the strongest that has ever been in NZ, depth wise.

The players who didn't make that team but were excelling in domestics very soon after include Milne, Henry, Kuggeleijn, Ferguson, Santner, Nicholls, Bruce.

You could end up with a retrospective X1 from that cycle of something like;

1. Latham
2. Solia / H Cooper
3. Nicholls
4. Bruce / Cachopa / Cleaver
5. Anderson / Boam
6. Neesham
7. M Bracewell
8. D Bracewell / Van Beek / Hampton
9. Milne / Small
10. Henry
11. Ferguson / Wheeler

Yeah, definitely the most depth of talent of any U20 squad I can remember, even if none of them were at the KW/Southee/Boult level of talent.

Whatever happened to Cachopa by the way? Seemed on the path to a national call-up or even potentially a switch to county cricket in the mid 10's.

He did switch to county cricket. But had a disatrously bad second season IIRC and was released.
Returned to Auckland, but was very 'unfit'.
I assume he then quietly gave it away.

I wonder what the U19s-who-never-were would have looked like.
The U19 team that missed the tournament in Carribbean due to covid restrictions.

Those from that cycle who have made it to provincial cricket, so far.
So, an add 2 years retrospective 11:

1. M Boyle
2. J Cumming
3. J Todd
4. M Abbas
5. C Heaphy
6. T Robinson
7. Z Foulkes
8. T Pringle
9. A Ashok
10 T Findlay
11. vacant
