Which ATG bowlers can defeat these batsmen?

If you had to pick one ATG bowler, past or present, to dismiss these batsmen within a full over, who would it be and why?

Viv
Lara
Ponting
Tendulkar
Steve Smith
Gavaskar
Kallis
Dravid
Kohli

The fact that you put this part in here makes the answer obvious. If you absolutely need a wicket quickly, the answer is going to be peak Waqar.

The man was the strike bowling equivalent of a nuclear bomb.

No one can confidently get it done in an over.... These are all ATG batsmen for a reason; they could defend against any bowler for an over atleast. Still, my picks will be, given suitable conditions:

Viv - Joel Garner (Garner had Viv's wicket 5x in West Indian domestic circuit, no one else more than twice)

Lara - Bill O'Reilly (Lara had trouble with Kumble in India, Tiger could be potentially deadlier in right conditions)

Ponting - Ravichandran Ashwin (Harbhajan made Ponting dance in India, Ashwin is perfect against him)

Tendulkar - Malcolm Marshall (Sachin didn't really had many perceivable weaknesses, so the best bowler seems the best bet)

Steve Smith - Waqar Younis (similar to Sachin, though I think in place of the very best bowler, the bowler with the best peak strike rate will do better against that technique)

Gavaskar - Dennis Lillee (Though in vastly different circumstances, Gavaskar doesn't really have a great record against Lillee)

Kallis - Sydney Barnes (Kallis had some trouble in England, let the English swing king handle him)

Dravid - Curtly Ambrose (Dravid had a problem with good bounce, especially in Australia. Perfect conditions for Ambrose)

Kohli - Richard Hadlee (Lateral movement is the wall between VK and Test greatness. In swinging NZ pitches, Hadlee can get it done)

On having to pick a single bowler for them all, it will be Glenn McGrath.

Nice selections. I think Kohli would have trouble with leftarmers like Wasim.

Probably with exception of Tendulkar and Lara, Murali would nail all others with regularity.

But answer is Malcolm Marshall.

I see Dravid having trouble with Joel Garner.

Steve Smith to me would struggle against an unconventional bowler type, I think Wasim would give him trouble with his variation.

Viv would find Ambrose quite tough to tackle. He would bore him to lose his wicket.

Ponting, I agree with Ashwin, he would cause him terrible trouble.

If picking a single bowler, the question is mostly just asking for the bowlers with the best strike rates in a roundabout way. With some level of adjustment for eras and playing conditions, that's Marshall, Waqar, and Steyn.

There's only one leftie on that list, so probably Steyn. He was kinda rubbish against lefties, but arguably the GOAT against righties. And Lara was a bit weak against extreme pace, so still a chance there if Steyn cranks it up.

I would think peak Malcolm Marshall. He was exceptional at picking out batsmen's weaknesses. As Wasim put it, "MM could find a batsmen's weakness in 2 deliveries."

Those are my three, as well. Waqar I go for absolute peak, Steyn for consistency, and Marshall gets a bit of the best of both worlds.

They skew my ideas of an "ideal" ATG bowling attack also. Might even keep McGrath out of it.

Eh.

Why would you play Steyn and Waqar in the same team if you have your pick? Pretty similar MO on conventional and reverse, both skiddy short bowlers, and both pretty limited In their skillset otherwise by ATG standards. Why pick both? Grab whoever you think is better.

Or better yet, why pick either? Imran and Hadlee pretty much have their skillset covered between the two of them, are a better pair of bowlers IMO, and will give you a huge amount more runs with the bat per game.

Yeah, when picking these teams, not just about the best, it's the types than compliment each other. My 3 are a little different from yours, but same basic philosophy. Marshall, McGrath and Steyn (just... over Imran)
