The legacy of Steve Smith

Qlder

International Debutant
When he retires he should make it somewhere in the top 5

Bradman
Ponting
Chappell
Border
Waugh

There's 7 that I hold above everyone else, and he's definitely in there, I'll leave it at that for now.

It's unfortunate that guys like Ponting (and according to Trundler, Wasim) are punished for playing too long, but with that in mind, we should wait until he's finished to determine how high he is in the highest pantheon.

Top 10 bat for sure. No signature shot at all that i can think of.
I hope he leaves no legacy in terms of his technique.
I respect him and what he's achieved, but cant say i enjoy watching him...and hate the thought of kids learning from him.

Not convinced that bowling attacks have been at their peak during Smith's career, and he's certainly benefitted from the fact that so many teams are diabolical when they tour Australia.

But he was sensational in the 2019 Ashes and basically earnt his team a draw in that series. Might just about be Top 20, the fact he's so painful on the eye costing him places.

All teams currently are poor at touring, partly comes from the lack of lead in matches due to crammed schedules (Test, ODI, T20 and so more Test teams). That Smith doesn't suffer much from issues away with little prep, is a positive to him.

Your comment on bowling attacks is odd, bowling averages (esp pace) are right down around the world, India for example has its best ever pace attack.

Batting is entertainment, and he may not be classically elegant, but his many constant manic mannerisms are entertaining to me.

Smith has 5 tons against India in Australia, only one since Jan 2015 (pre Bumrah/Siraj). Obviously, he missed the 2018/19 series - something else which kind of shits on his legacy!!

he played only 1 series after Jan 2015 in Australia against India, this is a weird comment

he had one of the greatest performances in India ever by a visiting batsman in 2017

Not if you're looking at the quality of bowling attacks to have toured Australia it's not.

Top 10 for sure, possibly top 5 but hard to say. He won’t break into the top 3 (at his current last 3/4 years rate) save a late surge.

What a load of horse **** post in general but even if the bolded part is right, he is still one of the greatest touring batsmen
