Atherton probably faced the strongest bowling out of every batsman to ever play the game.
I've said this a few times, don't think any batsman in these conversations ever had to consistently face the level of bowling that he did. And especially not at the top of the innings.

Both better batters than their average.
Exactly, but still have to give Atherton the edge being an opener and the level of bowling he faced

Yes. The volume of powerhouse bowling he faced is genuinely insane. As an opener that plays home home tests in England too. He's not a great of the game or anything but in a stable era with a stable distribution of fixtures, I think he could definitely have averaged 45.

Atherton is probably as good as Langer and Warner
