This is true, although I do get that they think they have to be seen to be upholding the laws. Surely no one would have cared if they'd just said actually no, a helmet broke, it's an essential piece of equipment, play on

Well he was ready to face after 1 minute 55, so technically was he not out?

Anyway, the video ref was clearly talking crap about him not being ready even before the strap broke. Very poor officiating on that aspect.

This is the timeline:

• Time 0 (3:18:57 of my feed): batter out
• 1 minute 27 seconds: Angelo Mathews is out in the middle and "fist bumps" his partner.
• 1 minute 50 seconds: He is at his batting crease
• 1 minute 53 seconds: His strap breaks
• 2 minutes 24 seconds: Shakib goes over to Matthews and the umpires, asking what is going on, and Matthews shows him the broken strap
• 2 minutes 50 seconds: Umpire takes one look back at Bangladesh, walks over to Matthrews sheepishly with his hands out and shrugs his shoulder
• 3 minutes: Matthews seems pissed. Likely Shakib has insisted on the appeal
• 3 minutes and 16 seconds: Runner has brought the new helmet to Matthews

So if he wasn't notably slow to the crease, but was only 10 seconds away from being timed out anyway, how much do we hate the ICC/MCC for reducing the 3 minutes to 2 minutes without any appreciation of the consequences?

EYE opening if true. The Fourth Umpire had said that Mathews was late out into the middle, apparently he was pulling it out of his backside then? ****ing unprofessional to go on air and claim the umpires didn't do anything wrong and the batsman was to blame when it's easily disproven.

It's also just dumb as there's not really many situations where time wasting is a legit benefit to a batting side in a LO innings as Bijed alluded to earlier, only if DLS is on the cards

I think I read that you have to be in your stance ready to face the ball, or something similar. Which he was?

Watching the footage, Shakib has no soul. Mathews goes to him to plead his case, clearly pointing out that there was a misfiring with the helmet. But Shakib is happy to look him dead in the eye, laugh a little about it and uphold the appeal. That is some next level prickery.

Not wrong...just context-wise, won't be as impactful. Pretty similar, really - within the laws, but putrid. I bet Shakib's team mates weren't over the moon about it, like Chappell's weren't either.
