Well, look on the bright side.. for pub trivia enthusiasts they can breathe a sigh of relief if they ever get that question one night about which cricketer was timed out that it wasn't Sadeera Samarawickrama but easy-to-spell & remember Angelo Mathews instead.

And destroy his reputation by not applying the Laws. I mean if you want to make umpires more of a target then go ahead with that.
Lol wut. It’s exactly what he should have done, not that he should have been put in that position to begin with.

I’m always grateful when Australia find a spurious reason not to have Bangladesh tour here. Now they can rightly be denied visas on character grounds

Gutted I missed this. Worth grabbing the iPad for the rest of the match?
There's been little edge since. Silverwood had a long chat with the 4th umpire, but out on the field it's been continuing as normal. Might be spicy when Shakib comes out to bat though....

He could easily have made the decision that Mathews was there to face a ball within the time, and the delay for a change of helmet is a separate one. Since the intent of the law is all about getting batsmen out of the pavillion and there's a whole other part about timewasting or similar the umpire is free to decide that the timed out dismissal doesn't apply imo.

I mean you can disagree with that line of thinking if you like, but saying the umpires don't have choices at all when it comes to interpreting the laws is silly.
This!

If Mathews had walked out and made it to within about 10-20 metres past the boundary & then suddenly stopped & motioned to the dressing room to quickly get him & helmet & it took too long while he just stood there in the same spot that would've been one thing.

However... he walked out to the crease.Surely all bets are off at that moment. He's locked himself in and just re-start the bloody clock & tell your team mate to 'get a move on' from the dressing room.

Not at the crease,man

Unfortunately the Bangers are just a grubby outfit. If anyone was going to bung this on it’d be that crook Al Hasan.
If the Aussies beat Afghanistan, the 2nd/3rd semi is guaranteed. They could lose to Bang to help kick England out of the Champions Trophy. But I sense even Aussies wouldn't want that!!

No motivation needed to win this match now , thought Bangladesh were better than to do such a cheap act to get a wicket , if Mathews hasn't made it to the playing field than fair enough, but to appeal cause the lad wanted safer helmet protection is scraping bottom of the barrel..
Doesn't matter If spinner was bowling what happens if Mathews takes a single , then on non strikers end a ball hits his head with a shot from Asalanka ? Helmet has to be changed regardless , poor form.
