I see your Stokes & raise you a Conway - Poll for Kiwi fans

Would you prefer to have had Stokes stayed in NZ at the cost of not gaining Devon Conway from SA?

Stokes' career averages do let him down a bit but the CDG comparison is disingenuous. Debuting during your prime is generally an advantage. A decade as a pace all-rounder is tough going. Stokes' averages during his best 6.5 year period are 39/28. Same length as CDG's test career. WPM and tons per innings both also in Stokes' favour.

Grieg comparison is similarly unfair. His test career came exclusively in his prime (not entirely the case for CDG I know). Likely explains why his first class average is a lot lower than his test average.

Stokes is the better batsman, while CDG is a slightly better bowler. CDG was incredibly useful as he could bowl as a 3rd seamer allowing Wagner to be 4th.

Shakib or Jadeja would've been far more useful to NZ than Stokes.

Surely Cairns v Stokes is a better comparison. Cairns is clear of Flintoff in tests.

But people are comparing if NZ lost much by not having Stokes, by virtue of having CDG in the side for most of that time. It wouldn't make much sense to compare him to Cairns who retired from tests in 2004.
Good point. I still think if CDG played as long as Stokes has, it would be more of a question on the surface.

Yeah, given CDG was in the NZ side for a fair chunk of Stokes' career, and definitely Stokes' best years, we didn't lose much there. Similar roles bowling, and while CDG didn't have as high a peak with the bat, that average shows he was the more consistent of the two.

Conway has been immense and given us that second world class player to go alongside Williamson now Taylor has retired. Between him and Mitchell I think it's played a big role in keeping us competitive after some of the big name players we've lost post WTC win. Conway for me.

Plus he's a Wellingtonian rather than a Cantab!

With these hypothetical situations Corey Anderson may have stayed fit and been picked ahead of Stokes, or Stokes may have concentrated on his batting and been picked ahead of Henry Nicholls, or even Jesse Ryder/Colin Munro/Jimmy Neesham been dominant test match players at 5/6/7.

Stokes making his career for NZ would be entirely different. While he'd probably be best mates with McCullum and feature heavily during his tenure, he'd have to do so under the plucky underdog tag that New Zealanders fall back on, whereas Stokes success and reputation has mostly derived from typical unfounded confidence that presents itself from the English. So Conway it is.

Stokes definitely wouldn't have played 100 tests if he stayed here. With his injuries he would have been lucky to match Cairns' career, and he wouldn't have the same endless opportunities to play big name sides.

He'd still be an incredible talent and a must play for NZ player when fit, but incidentally this is why 90% of cricketer direct comparisons on this site and reddit are stupid*

*this one of who you'd rather in the context of this team is good. More a shot at the subforum where we seem to check matches played, stats by country, old player opinions then call it a day. At least it's a subforum now.

Very Kippaxian of you.

Stokes lived in Plimmerton for a while.

True, Ged coached the Wellington Orcas in 2003 shortly before heading to the UK.

The more interesting hypothetical imo is the one where Stokes partnered Shaun Johnson in the halves for the Kiwis and Warriors for a decade (before making way for fellow Kiwi league great Nathan Cleary).
