I see your Stokes & raise you a Conway - Poll for Kiwi fans

Would you prefer to have had Stokes stayed in NZ at the cost of not gaining Devon Conway from SA?

Question for NZ fans.....apart from almost single-handedly costing NZ the 2019 WC final, would you rather have maintained Stokes in NZ (had his old man not moved across to the UK when Stokes was 13) without us gaining Devon Conway from SA?

Thinking about it, & apart from the pain of the WC final, I think overall I prefer NZ having Conway over Stokes if I had the choice, especially considering he's such a champion across all 3 formats.

Edit: I know this could be interpreted as a thread for the players comparison sub forum, but it is somewhat different..

I think Conway has been better than Stokes since his dayboo but Stokes would have given you a much longer career.

What makes it extra tough is that NZ is typically a bit shorter on top order bats than seam bowling batting allrounders. When CdG was playing Stokes wouldn't have been a massive upgrade anyway - certainly a smaller upgrade than Young-opening or Rutherford to Conway.

Tough one tbh they're both champion players but think I'm more than happy with Devon.
Anyone who scores a double ton on dayboo in England has something special about them. With Devon I think we knew this and that innings confirmed
what we suspected. He's a great player across all formats and hoping we haven't seen the best of him yet.

I'm gonna vote for too close to call because I reckon it depends on how long Conway does/can keep going. Because he had a late start I reckon he might be motivated to play on, which would probably tip it in his favour.

Lord colin: runs @ 39, wickets at 33.

Stokes: runs @ 36, wickets @ 32.

NZ have kane to captain and barely stay on the park with an injury, would rather the best all format opener in the world RN

We tend to produce more good allrounders than good top order batsmen. The alternative to Conway was converting Young there from the middle order or selecting Ravindra too soon.

So while Stokes would be nice to have, I've definitely been more envious of teams with good openers. We've been trying to find a reliable partner for Latham since about 2013.

Yes, Conway probably adds more value to NZ than Stokes would, in a similar way to how Mark Richardson was a more irreplaceable player than Chris Cairns was. But Stokes is box office, and with him NZ would be defending world champions, so I have to say Stokes.

The next 14 months are going to be massive for his career really. He's got the rest of this World Cup and then by the end of 2024 we've got 15 test matches scheduled including SA, AUS, ENG at home + IND Away.

I liked CdG as a player, but I'd be surprised if he returned those stats v the same opposition as Stokes.
V Aus
Stokes (36 & 39) CDG (25 & 41) - winner Stokes

v Ban
St (32 & 10) CDG (73 & 83) - draw

v India
St (27 & 32) CDG (27 & 53) Stokes

Stokes v NZ (41 & 73) CDG v Eng (44 & 37) CDG

v Pak
Stokes (22 & 36) CDG (18 & 17) CDG

v SA
Stokes (45 & 26) CDG (49 & 26) draw

v SL
Stokes (28 & 21) CDG (68 & 36) CDG

v WI
Stokes (48 & 27) CDG (62 & 28) CDG

So basically against the best Stokes is better.
